After a remarkable campaign that saw him progress from Benchmark 64 grade to claiming both the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup, star stayer Half Yours will now head to the paddock for a well-deserved spell.
Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the rising staying star has come through his Cup win in good order, but his team has no plans to rush him back into action.
“The autumn’s going to be very quiet for him,” Tony McEvoy said. “We’ve had him in all year; to think we can get him back in the autumn’s probably unfair.
“We haven’t made a decision, but we’ll probably go back to Queensland, there’s a race up there called the Q22 or the Doomben Cup and then probably target a Cox Plate, which can still open up the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
“First thing we want to do is get the horse to a paddock, just reward him for what he’s done for us.”
Should Half Yours return to Flemington next year and capture the Cox Plate, he would emulate the legendary Might And Power, who won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in 1997 before claiming the Cox Plate the following spring.
Half Yours is currently rated a $15 chance for the 2026 Cox Plate with bookies and is the $11 favourite to defend his Melbourne Cup crown.
