Champion jockey Frankie Dettori has suggested that he may be participating in this year’s Melbourne Cup as part of his retirement tour.
The statement came after Dettori’s successful ride with Gregory, which was hailed as his last appearance at the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting.
Dettori’s hint has since sparked intrigue about whether the decorated Italian jockey will attempt one final Melbourne Cup before hanging up his boots.
The scheduling of the Breeders’ Cup meeting on the Saturday just before the Melbourne Cup presents a potential obstacle for Dettori. However, it seems that the chance to seize his maiden Melbourne Cup victory is an irresistible draw.
During an interview with Racing.com’s Jason Richardson, Dettori confirmed his recent Royal Ascot appearance as his last, and teased a possible Melbourne Cup return.
“But not my last Melbourne Cup. If you’re listening, I’ll be back.” Dettori said.
This coy remark has added fuel to speculation that fans may yet have an opportunity to see Dettori’s expertise in action on the Australian racecourses once more.
