Promising stayer Delphi is inching closer to his highly anticipated return to the racetrack after a prolonged absence.
The colt, who clinched victory in the 2021 Herbert Power Stakes and garnered attention as the $5.50 second favorite in the 2021 Caulfield Cup, faced a setback with a tendon injury following last year’s first-up run.
Since then, Delphi has undergone an extensive rehabilitation program under the watchful eye of acclaimed conditioner Lee Evison, showing promising signs of progress.
Trainer Sam Freedman, who shares the training duties with his father Anthony, commended Evison’s efforts but indicated that Delphi might not be ready for the major staying races this spring.
Instead, the focus is now on the upcoming summer season, where Delphi is expected to target a couple of staying races, aiming for triumphs on his comeback trail.
His prior success in Ireland, securing four wins out of five races under Aidan O’Brien’s guidance, and a commendable seventh-place finish in the 2021 Melbourne Cup add to the intrigue surrounding his return.
