Rising star Hey Fat Cat has been sold to Hong Kong interests and will be under the tutelage of trainer Douglas Whyte. Trainer Robbie Laing confirmed the news to Racing.com on Thursday.
Laing acquired the Rubick gelding for just $20,000 in 2022 and the horse quickly rewarded that faith with two dominant victories to kick off 2024. Hey Fat Cat then showed promise in stakes company, finishing fifth in the Futurity Stakes and sixth in the prestigious Group 1 Australian Guineas.
Laing believes the talented gelding has significant potential: “Once he conquers his immaturity he’ll be the best horse over there,” he stated.
Hey Fat Cat’s owner, Alan Stephenson, also purchased the horse’s half-sister at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale for $40,000. This filly will remain in Australia and be trained by Laing.
This sale marks another successful chapter for Laing, who has enjoyed a strong start to 2024 with several city winners. He recently bolstered his stable with purchases at the Inglis HTBA Yearling Sales in Sydney.
