Ethan Brown was involved in a harrowing incident during the $1 million G1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday. The 23-year-old rider fell from tiring leader Maximillius at the 300-metre mark when tightened in an incident involving Holymanz, Elliptical, and Amenable.
Brown was subsequently transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital to receive medical treatment for internal injuries, while Holymanz’ rider Mark Zahra luckily escaped injury.
The Victorian Jockeys Association issued a statement shortly after 10pm on Saturday, saying that Brown had undergone surgery to address internal bleeding issues, with further surgery required.
Brown had recently achieved a major milestone in his career, riding his 400th winner last month.
The horses involved in the incident, Maximillius and Holymanz, were both trotted off the course after the Guineas. Maximillius sustained superficial abrasions, while Holymanz showed no abnormalities when inspected by Racing Victoria veterinarians.
