Nick Ryan threw in an ambitious nomination for the Oakleigh Plate before settling on the Senet Gambling Law Experts Handicap (1100m) with stylish winner Winnasedge.
An unlucky first-up sixth at Sandown, Winnasedge relished being ridden forward before scoring narrowly on Saturday.
Ryan said Winnasedge was likely to return to Caulfield for a VOBIS race in mid-March but had not ruled out a potential tilt at a rich handicap in the future.
“I did have him nommed for the Oakleigh Plate, which might have been a bit ambitious, but he’s going to go places for sure,” Ryan said.
“He’s VOBIS Gold, so he’ll come back here, and if he keeps progressing, we might look at a handicap down in the weights somewhere along the line, but we won’t get too far ahead of ourselves at this stage as he’s still got a few things he’s got to iron out.
“He can miss the start, he can get aggressive, so I was very happy to go to the 1100 (metres) today.
“He’s not the finished product yet, when he is, he’ll be pretty handy.”
