Alcopop who was one of the most popular horses of the past two decades has sadly passed away over night due to complicated health issues including cushings.
The bay gelding who was trained by Jake Stephens and usually ridden by Adelaide jockey Dom Tournuer, earned a brilliant $1.68 million dollars in stakes featuring 10 wins and six placings.
His one G1 win came in the 2012 Mackinnon Stakes but without doubt his career highlight was his narrow 2nd in the 2012 Caulfield Cup, where despite officially going off at 14/1 there was no doubts who the masses of punters where cheering on.
A very forgotten fact about the ‘Alco’ is that he travelled to Hong Kong for International Race Day in December and ran a terrific 3rd in the 2012 Hong Kong Cup over 2400m.
He would never race again after his cracking run overseas as an 8 year old but say the word Alcopop to any racing fan and they won’t get you a lolly water they’ll reminisce about the beautiful and honest race horse born and bred in Adelaide.
