Maggie Collett's small team hoping to reap rewards in the training ranks.

Maggie Collett is no stranger to the winners’ stall but the gifted horsewoman will chase her first win as a trainer at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.

A winner of almost 150 races as a jockey, Collett recently completed her apprenticeship and immediately took out a dual-licence that will allow her to train a small team of horses whilst continuing to ride in races.

For now, her stable consists of one horse, Just Like Lisa, who was previously prepared by Collett’s partner Justin Pickering.

The pair both operate from the same Callington property and utilise the facilities at Murray Bridge.

“I’ve kind of had it in the back of my mind that once I came out of my time (as an apprentice) I wanted to pursue training,” Collett said.

“We’ve got a big farm here and I’ve always had a lot to say with Pickles (Justin Pickering) and, while we mutually agree on most things, this was kind of a natural progression for me to take out my dual licence.”

Collett has won four races on Just Like Lisa and, while she knows the mare is feeling well and capable of running a cheeky race, she concedes that Saturday’s 1250m PFD Food Services Handicap contest may be beyond her.

The daughter of Choisir is rated $61 in a race that is headlined by Stakes winner Colmar ($2.50) and SA Magic Millions Classic winner Dancing Storm ($4).

But with the run under her belt, Collett is confident there is another win in the mare this preparation.

“I’m really excited leading into Saturday,” she said.

“There’s not much pressure on her because they will probably be too sharp over 1200m for her but she needs to have a run.

“She’s feeling really well and I’ve got a plan in mind for her going forward.”
