Boom stayer White Marlin nearing return to racing after injury

Former Melbourne Cup favourite White Marlin is inching closer to a return to racing after 18 months on the sidelines due to injury. The seven-year-old, trained by the renowned partnership of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, is eyeing a comeback in 2025 following a rigorous rehabilitation process.

White Marlin, an imported gelding with a stellar early career, captured attention by winning his first six starts before suffering tendon injuries in August last year. Despite the setback, the stable remains optimistic about his progress.

According to Waterhouse and Bott, White Marlin recently completed his rehabilitation and has been spelling for the past month. He will remain at rest for at least another two weeks before starting his pre-training program.

The talented grey last competed in the 2023 Andrew Ramsden Stakes, finishing a gallant second. Despite the extended hiatus, the stable reports that he is making promising strides toward a racetrack return.

“White Marlin is progressing well, and we’re encouraged by his recovery so far,” the stable shared with Racing.com.

Before making his much-anticipated return, the son of Mastercraftsman will need to meet stringent requirements, including a veterinary clearance and ultrasound results, which must be submitted to Racing Victoria stewards.

With a record of six wins from eight starts and no finish worse than second, White Marlin’s potential remains evident. His explosive performances early in his career solidified him as one of Australia’s most exciting stayers before his injury setback.

While White Marlin continues his recovery, the Waterhouse-Bott team has been bolstering its arsenal for the 2025 Melbourne Cup. Recent acquisitions, including Irish stayer Vauban and high-profile import Delius, signal the stable’s commitment to assembling a formidable lineup for next year’s spring carnival.
