Sydney jockey Blake Spriggs is continuing his recovery in Royal Canberra Hospital after a serious fall during a race at Moruya on January 17. Spriggs sustained multiple rib fractures, major collarbone and arm fractures, and punctured lungs, requiring surgery on his collarbone and arm. While bleeding in his lungs has eased, doctors are closely monitoring his condition after a lung infection was detected earlier this week.
Providing an update on social media, Spriggs’ brother Dustin clarified his condition: “Many fractures in his ribs. Major collarbone and arm fracture. Surgery on those were successful. Punctured lungs are still the focus, but all the bleeding from them has eased.”
Rumours about Spriggs being in a coma were also dismissed by Dustin. “Reports that Blake is in a coma and has never been conscious are garbage,” he stated.
Family members, including his fiancée Kasey and sister Dimitee, have remained by his side daily. Despite heavy sedation with ketamine to prevent coughing, Spriggs has remained responsive, even squeezing the hands of loved ones. Visits from friends, including trainer Mitch Beer, have also helped lift his spirits.
“The support has been overwhelming and it’s much appreciated,” Dustin added, urging the public to ignore misinformation and focus on Blake’s ongoing recovery.
