Grahame Begg is confident in Maharba’s prospects as he prepares for a second attempt at the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on Saturday.
The talented gelding finished fourth in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes after a forward position, and his trial at Cranbourne on Monday over 1000 metres was impressive, where he ran second, just behind Another Wil.
Despite the challenge posed by some strong Sydney contenders, Begg believes Maharba is in top form.
“He’s in great order, and he went very nicely in a jumpout last week,” Begg told racing.com.
“He’s well-prepared for Saturday, with a solid record up the straight. The field’s composition will be interesting, especially with some Sydney horses possibly coming down due to wet tracks.”
Begg added that the Newmarket has been the primary goal since Maharba’s unlucky runner-up finish in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot.
