Goldrush Guru will take his place in the ATC Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 5 despite an underwhelming performance in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on the weekend.
Trainer Andrew Gluyas admitted the colt raced too aggressively last start and is considering gear changes to help him settle.
“He just didn’t settle and raced a bit fiercely,” the trainer told Racing.com after the colt’s seventh placing, nearly seven lengths from winner Broadsiding.
“We have to be more disciplined about finding cover there in the (ATC) Derby. That will be something we have to work on.
Despite the recent disappointment, Gluyas remains optimistic about his three-year-old’s staying potential.
“If things go well, he’ll run it out for sure, we know that.
“We need to trust in him a bit.”
The current Derby market has Goldrush Guru at $9, while New Zealand Derby champion Willydoit leads betting at $3.50.
