Melbourne Cup Information

The 2027 Melbourne Cup is set for Tuesday 2 November at Flemington Racecourse, with the race expected to jump at 3pm AEDT. Australia’s best-known staying race brings local and overseas horses together for a Group 1 handicap over 3,200 metres.

Whether you’re following the form, heading to Flemington or sorting out the office sweep, we’ve got the Cup covered. Find out which races to watch on the way to Flemington, how to tune in on Cup Day and where to find the field, odds and tips.

What time is the 2027 Melbourne Cup?

Watching from interstate? Here’s when to tune in for the expected start.

  • 3pm AEDT in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Hobart.
  • 2.30pm ACDT in Adelaide.
  • 2pm AEST in Brisbane.
  • 1.30pm ACST in Darwin.
  • 12 noon AWST in Perth.

The Cup was Race 7 on a 10-race card in 2026. If you’re planning your day around the race, check the Flemington race card for the final times. Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday across Victoria, with some regional areas observing a different local holiday.

2027 Melbourne Cup field, horses and barrier draw

Victoria Derby Day, Saturday 30 October, is the day to look out for the final field and barrier draw. The Cup can have up to 24 runners. There are no emergencies under the recent Cup rules, so a scratching can leave the field a horse short.

Got a horse in mind already? The nominations tell you who’s entered, and the order of entry gives you a better idea of who’s likely to get a run. Horses can drop out at each round of acceptances, so keep an eye on the ballot as the race gets closer.

Melbourne Cup form guide and key lead-up races

When we look through a Cup field, the first question is whether a horse will see out the trip. Then we look at the weight, the track and where it might settle. There’s a long run to the first turn at Flemington, so a wide draw can be manageable if the jockey finds cover. Getting caught wide is a different story over 3,200 metres. Melbourne Cup form guide

Melbourne Cup Golden Ticket and ballot-exempt races

Win a Golden Ticket race and the ballot is one less thing for connections to worry about. The winner earns an exemption as long as the horse meets the Cup’s entry and acceptance conditions.

The road to the Cup starts at Flemington with the Roy Higgins (2,600m) on Saturday 27 March and the Andrew Ramsden (2,800m) on Saturday 15 May. Keep an eye on the lead-ups here and overseas, too. Here’s who won the Golden Ticket races last year.

Andrew Ramsden Australia Zakouma

Which spring lead-up races should you watch?

  • Caulfield Cup. One of the first replays we’d pull up. The 2,400-metre handicap gives you a look at how the stayers stack up in Group 1 company. Half Yours won both Cups in 2025.
  • Geelong Cup. A good race to watch if you’re trying to work out how an import has settled in. Point Of Law won at Geelong first up in Australia and went straight to Flemington to win the Cup.
  • Cox Plate. Look at how the horse ran as well as where it finished. Gold Trip was ninth in the 2022 Cox Plate before stepping up in trip and winning the Melbourne Cup.

International runners

There’s always interest in who’s coming from overseas. Vintage Crop won for Ireland in 1993, and the Prix Kergorlay in France featured in the lead-ups of Cup winners Americain, Dunaden and Protectionist well before it became a Golden Ticket race. The Ebor Handicap at York is another replay worth looking up if a runner is headed to Flemington. Melbourne Cup international runners

2027 Melbourne Cup odds, tips and betting

The Melbourne Cup market can look very different after the weights come out or a horse wins its way into the field. If you’re taking an early price, check what happens to the bet if your horse misses the race. Once the field is out, check back for our runner-by-runner preview, best bet and roughie.

  • Win and place. A win bet needs your horse to finish first. A place bet pays if it finishes in one of the market’s designated places.
  • Quinella. Pick the first two horses in either order.
  • Trifecta and first four. Pick the first three or four finishers respectively in the correct order. A boxed bet covers multiple finishing orders.

Read our Melbourne Cup betting guide for more on bet types and how they work.

Melbourne Cup sweep for work, school or home

Running the office sweep? Grab the field, write each horse’s name and saddlecloth number on a slip and put the slips in a hat. Check the scratchings first. A free draw with bragging rights or small prizes works just as well at home or in the classroom.

  • More horses than people? Go around the group until everyone has the same number of horses, then set the leftovers aside. Agree up front whether the prize goes to the best finisher someone drew if a leftover horse wins.
  • What if your horse is scratched? If there are slips left, you can draw a replacement. If every horse has been taken, agree before you start whether you’ll redraw or stick with the original draw.

2026 Melbourne Cup results and replay

Point Of Law won the 2026 Melbourne Cup at just his sixth start. Royal Supremacy opened up a big lead and Ethan Brown was farther back on the favourite than he wanted to be. Once Brown got him into the clear, Point Of Law let down in the straight and put the race away. He beat Zahrann by 3¾ lengths in 3:21.88, with Juja Kibo third to give Ciaron Maher the first training trifecta in Cup history.

Melbourne Cup history, records and past winners

Archer won the first Melbourne Cup at Flemington in 1861 and came back to win it again a year later. Carbine had 38 rivals and about 66kg on his back when he won in 1890, still the heaviest weight carried to victory. Phar Lap won in 1930 when the race was still run over two miles. The Cup switched to 3,200 metres in 1972.

  • Fastest winning time. Kingston Rule ran 3:16.30 in 1990.
  • Most wins by a horse. Makybe Diva won three in a row from 2003 to 2005. Archer, Peter Pan, Rain Lover and Think Big won twice each.
  • Most wins by a trainer. Bart Cummings trained 12 Cup winners, from Light Fingers in 1965 to Viewed in 2008.
  • Most wins by a jockey. Bobbie Lewis and Harry White share the record with four wins each.
  • Landmark rides. Michelle Payne became the first woman to ride a Cup winner on Prince Of Penzance in 2015. Jamie Melham won both the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup on Half Yours in 2025, becoming the first woman to ride that double.

How long does the Melbourne Cup take to run?

The race itself usually takes about three minutes and 20 seconds. The exact time varies with the pace and track conditions.

What is the difference between a horse’s number and its barrier?

The horse’s number appears on its saddlecloth and identifies it in the race card and sweep. The barrier is its position in the starting gates.
