With racing season finale fast approaching, the good horses are close to returning and with that, the door for 2024/25 will be properly shut. With so much racing on, there is bound to be big moves from a betting perspective that both come unstuck and salute.
Down below is what we feel are the 10 biggest betting plunges of 2024/25.
1: Broadsiding – Golden Rose: This was one of the biggest moves seen in a Group l for some time. He was first up at 1400m and the punters early weren’t sure what to do with him. But #They said he was a moral and duly backed him. He was $3.20 but the last half hour of betting saw a sustained push, ending up starting $2.15 and he got the win in an epic edition of the Golden Rose, landing decent five figure bets in the process.

2: Kingswood – Sandown: A big betting plunge was pulled off in late September by the Gavin Bedggood stable when Kingswood, having his first run for the stable, bolted up to win at Sandown. He ended up starting $9 after opening as high as $67 and he gave nothing else a look in to win impressively. He went on with it for the Spring too, winning a couple of other races subsequent, proving he wasn’t just a one trick pony that was set up for a first up plunge.

3: Navyonthehighway – Doomben: Big go was landed in late October by Team Munce with their promising mare Navyonthehighway, who resumed in a Class 3 at Doomben. She was first up and bookmakers weren’t sure to do with her. The punters knew though and smashed her with confidence, into $1.60 from an opening price of $3.50 and she didn’t give her suporters a moment of concern, bolting up from the front.

4: Gringotts – The Gong: Punters were unsure about this guy given he was topweight, drawn wide and was coming off a big win in The Big Dance. But the last half hour of betting suggested he was going to win and win well. That is exactly how it panned out. Drew wide, and his intent was there from the outset, finding the front after a few hundred metres, and once he found the front, he got front end control and he gave nothing else a look in to win and win well. The horse was flying at the time, but the ride certainly was a big factor as to why the horse won. He was $3.60 but crunched late into $2.60.

5: Sunrays – Bill Carter Stakes: Class filly for Kelly Schweida who was beautifully placed during the Winter Carnival and the market said she was a good thing in the Bill Carter, backed into $1.80 from $2.45 and she was impressive in the run to the line.

6: Money For Old Rope – Broome: The saying “it is only a rort if you’re not involved” probably applies to this win. The horse was beaten a combined 17 lengths his past two but the punters…or #they knew he was going to get the race set up on a platter for him because he was as much as $7.50 and backed into $3.20. He won by a space, as the market expected.
“Fixing Scandal!”
Money For Old Rope indeed! $7.5 into $3.1.

7: Sequel – Doomben: Not unusual to see a big betting move in an early 2YO race but this was a big move for one of the opening 2Yo races in QLD this season. Peter Sinclair trained and off the back of a trial win at Doomben, she debuted there and was very well tried throughout the week, in from around close to double figures to start $2.60. Unfortunately, she was plain late and has been plain since, even when Chris Waller took over training.

8: Amosu – Gold Coast: Liam Birchley is no stranger to pulling off a betting move and this was one of the better ones seen. Contesting The Debut at the Gold Coast Magic Millions, she was smashed into $4.60 after opening $18 and despite a few nervous moments in the run, she knuckled down late to win.

9: Autumn Glow – Rosehill: It’s very rare for Chris Waller to debut a horse at a Saturday metro meeting, but he did it with this filly but bookmakers weren’t sure what to do with her and opened her around $7-$8. Punters immediately took that and she ended up starting near $3, giving them a start and a beating in an electric performance and won another two races before injury stopped her running and likely winning the Flight Stakes.

10: Pereille – Starlight Stakes: This was a big betting move that came unstuck. He was as much as $26 all in and was backed there. Final field though, he opened around $8-$9 and yes, there were deductions, but it was a sustained push from Wednesday, backing him into around $3.50. Unfortunately, the overs god wasn’t kind, as he got back nearer the inside and in the worst ground, couldn’t quite finish the race off.
