With a background in rodeos, Shayleigh Ingelse didn’t set out wanting to be a jockey – spending time with Horsham trainer Paul Preusker with the aim of learning to break in horses. But a bit of track work and a jump-out had her excited and a new career path emerged…
Do you come from a horse/racing family?
Not really, Mum worked in racing when she was younger but I was not brought up around it.
Did you always want to be a jockey?
Never even gave it a thought until I started riding jump-outs at home.
What is your first racing memory?
Going to the Hobart races with mum to watch Chad Lever ride.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
Definitely Mini Man, my own quarter horse who I have trained myself and who Iβm extremely proud of.
Who is the best horse you have ridden?
Lunar Fox.
Who is the best horse you have seen?
Ka Ying Rising.
Your favourite racing moment?
The day my parents surprised me at my first meeting.
Your best ride?
The Impeckable at Orange.
Best ride of another jockey you have seen?
Brenton Avdulla in the Golden Slipper on Fireburn.
Is there a ride you wish you could do again?
Plenty!
Which horse currently racing would you love to be riding?
Mr Brightside.
Which horse from the past would you love to have ridden?
Phar Lap.
Do you think horses know they have won?
Definitely.
If you time travel into a past racing moment what would it be?
Not too sure, would be cool to be trackside for any of the greats.
Who do you admire most in racing?
Probably Paul Preusker; he is always willing to help someone out and has interesting perspectives on things.
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
More people willing to help out with simple tasks like leading a tricky horse or organising gear.
What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced in racing?
400m jump-outs with a bunch of apprentices in Newcastle!
What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?
Rodeos and riding my own horse.
What is your favourite T.V show?
Suits.
Best concert you’ve seen?
Never been to one.
What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?
Create the life you canβt wait to wake up to.

Steak.
Favourite racecourse?
Randwick.
If you had not been a jockey what would you have done?
I would have put 100% into rodeoing (barrel racing and roping); maybe I even would’ve tried to go to America.
