The 2026 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick shapes as a genuine staying test with plenty of depth, and the market reflects that with no clear standout. Mr Monaco brings strong form through the Manion Cup and looks a leading contender after doing plenty of work in the run, while Newlook comes off a dominant Chairman’s win and has to be respected with confidence high. Piggyback is a fascinating runner dropping back to handicap conditions after a brave Tancred effort, while Soul Of Spain profiles as a horse set specifically for this race if he can see out the two miles.
From a betting perspective, Piggyback appeals as a strong each-way play given her toughness and the quality of her recent form, especially back in more suitable conditions. Mr Monaco and Newlook look the main dangers, while Highland Bling is another who could surprise if the race is run to suit. In what looks a wide-open Sydney Cup, siding with a proven stayer at odds like Piggyback could prove the right move.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2026 Sydney Cup.
2026 Sydney Cup Runner Preview:
1. River Of Stars: Gets J Mac and placed in this race last year…I just don’t know about her. Goes up 4.5kg from last year and hasn’t done much in those 12 months. If she wins, I am losing on the race.
2. Campaldino: SCR
3. Changingoftheguard: If he brings his best, he can go close…but he hasn’t shown his best for some time so for mine, he goes through to the keeper.
4. Soul Of Spain: Looks to have been set for the race and has been ticking along nicely in lead ups. Just has to run 3200m but if he does, he is in the mix.
5. Whisky On The Hill: Lapped up the bog to win the Roy Higgins and secure his Melbourne Cup start. This is a free hit at a Group l basically but he won’t get conditions to suit.
6. Valiant King: I think there is enough evidence to say that he is a much better horse racing on the Melbourne leg vs Sydney. Not for me.
7. Paradise Storm: SCR
8. Piggyback: Piggyback looks a great each way gamble IMO. First look at WFA last time out in the Tancred, clearly outclassed, clearly poorly weighted, but I thought she ran out of her skin in defeat behind Aeliana. Back to a handicap, 3200m should be fine and she brings the A1 form. Quite keen on her prospects.
9. Athabascan: Still having therapy after the 2024 Sydney Cup where he looked $1.01 in the run but couldn’t run past Circle On Fire. He’ll run well but I have others ahead of him.
10. Juja Kibo: He’ll stay and run the trip. Just not sure if he has that desire and want to win a race. He’ll whack and could pinch a place.
11. Mr Monaco: I think you have to give serious respect to Mr Monaco after his Manion Cup triumph because he did it sitting wide no cover the entire 2400m yet was too good. Plus, that form stood up in the Chairmans last weekend. He has to be rated as a leading contender.
12. Machine Gun Gracie: She gapped them in the Epona…them being an ordinary bunch IMO but she was dominant and she has always shown staying prowess. Keen to see how she goes at the two miles and has to be respected.
13. Newlook: Lapped up the conditions to win the Chairmans and was dominant in the run to the line. Confidence is up, he can win without surprising.
14. Litzdeel: Bit of a negative ride in the Roy Higgins and was set a task I thought behind Whisky On The Hill. She’ll run the trip and is dangerous if ridden with more intent.
15. Highland Bling: Tried his absolute guts out in the Adelaide Cup but just missed in a driving go. He’ll love the trip, he lands in a plum spot, dry track ideal…a win wouldn’t shock.
16. Hutchence: I said last week if Militarize won the Doncaster, racing needs to be shut down…same can be said if Hutchence wins this. I think he’ll love 3200m…but only when there are jumps involved because that is his level.

Think there will be reasonable tempo here. Machine Gun Gracie and Campaldino look the obvious two. I think Litzdeel will be ridden with intent and settling forward, likewise Changingoftheguard, Piggyback and maybe Juja Kibo.
