Trainer Colin Scott will breathe a huge sign of relief should his stable star Speediness claim the Group1 Rupert Clark Stakes Sunday. Scott has seen his Testa Rossa gelding twice been beaten less than a neck at the elite level and was only half a length from the winner Rebel Dane in this race last year when fourth. The one positive to the narrow losses is that Speediness has escaped the handicapper and will carry the same weight as he did last year 55.5kgs. Given his WFA form it is an appealing weight. Speediness is $9.00, one of nine runners under $12. Current favourite for the race is Sweet Idea who was the subject of good support as soon as her $8.00 opening price was posted. She’s at $6.00 just in advance of Dissident who has eased from $5.00 to $7.00

Sir Rupert Clark Stakes Form Guide

Special Offer: $250 FREE BET – Sportsbet

Special Offer 2: $250 FREE BET – Ladbrokes

Special Offer 3: $500 FREE BET – Luxbet

1. DISSIDENT – B Melham (5) 58kgs

One of the leading 3yo’s of last season has stamped himself a genuine top-liner with two Group 1 wins from as many starts since returning from a spell. He was dominant in the G1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) first up, sprinting well from an on-pace position before digging in deep over the final furlong in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) last start, kicking back to nose out Fawkner – who was first up, on the line. Drawn ideally in gate five, is in outstanding form but does have to give the field at least 2.5kgs here

Odds: $7.00

2. SPEEDINESS – C Williams (12) 55.5kgs

Warming up nicely over the final stages to run fourth (2.9 lengths) first up behind impressive winner Chautauqua in the Bobbie Lewis (1200m) a fortnight ago, the same race he won last year before running a cracking fourth in the 2013 edition of this race. Like he did last year, he has drawn wide on Sunday but his second up record is very solid and includes a second to Appearance last prep in the G2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) under WFA conditions. Can win this.

Odds: $10.00

3. SWEET IDEA – T Berry (8) 53.5kgs

Consistent mare who last start ran second to Dissident (2.3 lengths) in the G1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) backing up a tough win when resuming from a spell in the G2 Missile Stakes (1200m) – both races under WFA conditions. Meets Dissident 2.5kgs better this time and just doesn’t know how to run a bad race. Will go forward and be in this for a long-way.

Odds: $6.50

4. ALMA’S FURY – C Newitt (13) 53kgs

Tony Gollan’s galloper claimed both the Listed Eye Liner Stakes and Glasshouse Handicap in consecutive starts during the Brisbane carnival before being freshened up and returning in the G3 Bobbie Lewis. He travelled well behind the pace in the Bobbie Lewis but first up couldn’t sprint with the leaders over the final 150m and finished seventh (4 lengths) behind Chautauqua. Recent second up runs have been good whilst not in races of this standard and the draw will make it tough.

Odds: $81.00

5. A TIME FOR JULIA – G Boss (1)

Peter Moody’s mare has run second by narrow margins in each of her two runs back from a spell. Racing from the front on both occasions, she was ousted by Gregers (long neck) in the G3 Bellmaine Stakes and by Girl Guide (short head) in last week’s G3 Sportingbet Stakes. Will again be amongst the leaders here but from six starts beyond 1200m, she has only the one win – a 3yo fillies race. Just might find it hard to hold out the challengers the last half a furlong.

Odds: $9.00

6. ATLANTE – S Baster (4) 52kgs

Secured a lovely run and drove through late to win the Drummond Gold Stakes first up, beating Trust In Gust by a nose in the 1200m Listed event. She’s double his price here?? Carried 57kgs then and drops nicely here which, combined with her inside gate, should see her take up a prominent position. It’s best to forget her final two runs last prep – both on wet tracks which she doesn’t enjoy – and go on her head second to Dissident in the G2 Hobartville Stakes last season.

Odds: $13.00

7. CLUSTER – T Clark (14) 52kgs

Came from last to round up his seven opponents well and deservedly win the G2 Theo Marks (1400m) last start, defeating Bull Point by a head. It continued his good form this prep but he faces a tougher field here, has drawn wide and will carry only a kilo less than last start. Good galloper but will take a career best to be winning here.

Odds: $7.50

8. SISTINE DEMON – B Avdulla (11) 52kgs

As expected the 5yo gelding jumped to the front in the G3 Bobbie Lewis when resuming from a spell a fortnight ago and stuck on well for fifth (3 lengths) behind Chautauqua and others who finished from the tail of the field and wider out. Took a dip at some good races at the end of last campaign but wet tracks didn’t suit. Bold front runner who has some good speed drawn inside of him and may be vulnerable the last 100m if he tries to cross them all.

Odds: $9.00

9. RHYTHM TO SPARE – D Yendall (7) 52kgs

Well supported first up, firming from 6/1 into 9/2 and had a run during the race that should’ve seen him do better than his fifth (2.1 lengths) behind Late Charge in the Listed The Sofitel Stakes (1400m). Started 14/1 and finished within two lengths of winner Boban in his last attempt at a Group 1 race – the WFA Emirates Stakes however, needed to see more from him first up before including him in selections here.

Odds: $34.00

10. AKAVOROUN – M Payne (3) 52kgs

The lightly raced five year old has roared through the grades courtesy of six wins from eight starts, including the Listed Winter’s Championship (1600m) where he defeated The Cleaner – good form. Had a couple of months off after that run and returned in the Bobbie Lewis, running sixth (3.2 lengths).  Warmed up nicely last start and will strip fitter however, for a horse that gets back, the inside gate is not ideal and he’ll require plenty of luck from the 800m home.

Odds: $21.00

11. BULL POINT – J Cassidy (10) 52kgs

Given every chance by Corey Brown last start in the G2 Theo Marks but he found Cluster a shade too strong late, running second (head). That backed up a good effort when resuming from a spell when third (2.9 lengths) to Terravista, who has been impressive again since. Started favourite in last season’s G1 The Futurity – over this track/trip – and finished fourth (1.4 lengths) behind track specialist Moment Of Change. Should enjoy the solid tempo and from gate ten, Cassidy will be able to secure a track into the straight.

Odds: $11.00

12. LATE CHARGE – V Duric (2) 52kgs

Big win last start in the Listed The Sofitel Stakes (1400m), his second run back from a spell, after being caught wide throughout from the jump and being pushed wider still on the turn. Deserves his crack at a good race like this and mixed it well with some of the better 3yo last season but just may find a couple here too good.

Odds: $12.00

13. TRUST IN GUST – D Lane (9) 52kgs

Sent out the even money favourite last start, in a Open Handicap (1400m), after a nose second to Atlante in the Drummond Gold Stakes at his previous start. Secured a lovely run throughout and didn’t let punters down, winning comfortably by 2.3 lengths. Going well and has a good strike rate overall but still yet to win a stakes race let alone a Group 1.

Odds: $7.50

14. GIG – K Mallyon (6) 52kgs

Tough, tough mare who seems to be thriving on her heavy racing schedule – this will be her fourteenth start in the past five months and although she hasn’t registered a win this campaign, she has run some bold races that include third in the G2 P B Lawrence to Star Rolling and last start, fifth (beaten ¾ length) to Commanding Jewel in the G2 Let’s Elope Stakes. She’s nothing if not honest but hard to see her breaking her winless drought in this, the toughest test she’s faced.

Odds: $7.00

RACE OVERVIEW

A lot of speed here with Sweet Idea, Sistine Demon, A Time For Julia and Dissident among others, all keen to take up a forward position. There was enough in his first up finishing effort to suggest Speediness could record a deserved Group 1 win here. The pace up front will help and last prep he was competitive in the top WFA Group 1’s so is well in here at the weights. Can’t leave Dissident out and he only needs a comfortably run, which he should receive after drawing well, to ensure he’s strong late under 58kgs. Atlante’s first up win may have been a bonus and as stated by her trainer post race, will derive good benefit from that hit-out. Was considered among one of the best in a strong contingent of New Zealanders who come across in the autumn but wet tracks prevented her from doing her best, can run a big race here provided the track is firm.
