Roman Consul Stakes Form Guide
1. YOUR SONG
Excellent when resuming after a seven week freshen up when running second to Pierro in the G3 Run To The Roses. He followed that up three weeks ago with an eighth (beaten 6.8) in the G1 Golden Rose. He sat up on a slick speed that day and the race was taken out by those finishing hard. Will be ridden with a sit here and only has to reproduce the Run To The Roses run to be in the finish.
Odds: $5.00
2. DESTRUCTION
Won a Rosehill Open on debut and backed that up with a win in the Listed Dalrello Stakes in Brisbane over their carnival. Resumed in the in Heritage stakes a fortnight ago and offered little when beaten 7.4 lengths behind Ichihara. Would need significant improvement.
Odds: $17.00
3. KNIGHT EXEMPLAR
A well bred colt by Exceed and Excel who, from his three starts thus far has yet to register a win – despite having gone close on each occasion. His last start was a week and a half ago in a Canterbury Maiden, finishing a long neck second to Rebel Dane.
Odds: $9.00
4. ROYAL RADA
A Melbourne visitor from the Clint McDonald yard who returned to race with a pleasing effort in a 3yo Open race at Caulfield won by Lankan Rupee, a fortnight back. Respect stable’s decision to have a tilt at this race and the inside draw and Bowman’s service add to his chances further.
Odds: $9.00
5. ICHIHARA
A smart filly from Alan Denham’s yard who has won four of her six starts. Her most recent outing was a dominant win in the Listed Heritage Stakes here at Randwick a fortnight ago. Expect her to lead again today and give the boys plenty to catch.
Odds: $1.85
6. QUEEN’S ELECT
A filly who hasn’t raced since running sixth of thirteen in BM 75 over 1800m at Rosehill in August. Does have a third to Destruction and Kabayan to her record early in her seven start career but since then, her best efforts seem to be over trips much longer than this one.
Odds: $31.00
7. JOLIE BAY
Well bred filly by Fastnet Rock out of the well performed mare, Legally Bay who has had two starts to date. Her most recent was at Hawkesbury where she broke her Maiden status with a long neck win coming from near last on the turn over 1000m.
Odds: $8.00
OVERVIEW
Ichihara should get a comfortable lead here and as her record suggests and she demonstrated last start, she’s a more than capable galloper who will be in this for a long way. Prepared to forgive Your Song for his last start effort, he camped on the speed that day and the placegetters (Epaulette and Albrecht – both of who have run well since) steamed home from the tail of the field. He’ll have to keep Ichihara within his sites though. The Melbourne colt by Haradasun, creates a bit of interest. His trainer has a good strike rate when he ventures north and he showed enough in a race dominated by on-pacers first up to be considered here.
