The curtain raiser to the G1 Kingston Town Stakes is for the 3yo’s over nine furlongs. A small field of nine take part with a couple of standout chances dominating the markets, namely

1. REBELSON – J Whiting (9)
Won his two starts, including the Listed Fairetha Stakes, leading into the G2 WA Guineas last start where he had little luck in obtaining a run in the straight and finished 3.8 lengths behind Academus. From his draw, imagine he will get back again and does give the field a minimum of 2kgs.
Odds: $4.80
2. RAISING DUBAI – D Staeck (1)
A gelding by Dubai Destination that is still searching for his maiden win. Has had five race starts with the latest of them being a third in a Bunbury Maiden, beaten 3 lengths over 1690. He’ll struggle in this class.
Odds: $26.00
3. WESTERN BLAZE – W Pike (6)
He’s only had three starts to date for his trainer Grant Williams and broke his maiden status at the most recent outing by registering a 1 ¼ length win in over Kim China in a Restricted 3yo race at Ascot last week. Good style of win last start and whilst it’s a big jump in class to this, he will still be on the improve and not to be underestimated.
Odds: $3.60
4. STEEL BUSINESS – J Noske (5)
He has had eight starts in his career with the best of them being a third, when on debut, back in October last year as a 2yo. Remarkably, he is attempting this race first up from a 12 week spell. Not for me.
Odds: $201.00
5. THE DANEHILL ROSE – T Turner (8)
She struggled in her first three runs this time in but has produced better results at her two most recent outings. Two starts back (at 150/1) she finished 1.5 lengths behind Fuddle Dee Duddle and backed them up a fortnight later with a close second behind Passion Cantata. Better efforts of late but still question if they’re good enough to see her winning here.
Odds: $6.50
6. BIPPO NO BUNGUS – S Parnham (4)
Has been ridden much quieter at his last two starts and it appears to be agreeing with him. He ran second to Fuddle Dee Duddle two starts back in the Skyy Vodka Stakes (G3) and to prove it was no fluke, flew home from last on the turn to go under by a lip to Academus in the G2 WA Guineas. That’s as solid form for this and rate him on top.
Odds: $2.50
7. COVENTRY TO RIO – P Carbery (7)
He’s won one of his four starts this time in and that was two runs back when a half length victory over Synoptic in a Restriced 3yo race. Drew wide and went forward last start only to weaken over the concluding stages and finished fourth (beaten 2 ¼ lengths) behind Western Blaze. Can improve with a better run in transit.
Odds: $18.00
8. LADY CARRIE – G Smith (2)
A, filly by Oratorio who broke her maiden status last start with a win in a Narrogin Maiden over 1720m, where she ran on, as she has done in all her starts to date, from the tail of the field. The distance shouldn’t be a problem but the class will definitely test her.
Odds: $26.00
9. DANELLA – C Staples (3)
A filly who, in her last four starts, has contested in three Northam Maidens and last start, a Maiden at Ascot. She finished fifth, seventh, fifth and tenth respectively and her efforts suggest that she won’t be a threat here.
Odds: $201.00
SUMMARY
Really like the Bippo No Bungus here. Think that he is a horse that is just starting to realise his potential and given the finish he produced last start, the 1800m of today’s race should suit ideally. Dangers I think are limited to Rebelson, should’ve finished closer last start and Western Blaze.
