2022 JJ Atkins Runner Preview
1. Brereton:Β He was a month between runs and 1000m to 1400m in the Sires, and I thought he was one of the better runs of the race behind Sheeza Belter. I just question how strong that form will be and he’s drawn tricky again.
2. Twin Stars:Β Ridden very negatively in the Sires two weeks ago and was good late nearer the inside. 1600m no issue and will be strong late if this becomes a testing mile. Definite winning chance.
3. Cocobrew Express:Β Wide throughout in the Sires but was still safely held so cannot entertain him here.
4. Political Debate:Β Bred to be a star…was last week his GF? He just scraped in and he is still in his first prep. He could easily make a mug of me and blow this field away, but I’m prepared to risk.
5. Mishani Spartan:Β Was okay in The Phoenix last Saturday but he’s not good enough to trouble this lot.
6. Brosnan:Β Brosnan brings strong #SF form so he commands respect. Seven weeks between runs after a Sydney Autumn prep when racing over 1400m at Flemington where he was ridden a treat by McNeil and class got him home. The way he has raced, he’ll eat up the mile and does bring relatively fresh legs.
7. Green Shadows:Β Sneaky flying this horse. But like the Sires, he will likely have to drag back to last and hope for luck, a drag into the race. He’s certainly capable. Just needs luck in the run.
8. Heroic Son:Β Not going well enough to threaten.
9. Owen County:Β Been a fan of Owen County since day one and won’t be dropping off here. He’s had three career outings, the latest being a strong win two weeks ago at Randwick when finishing off with purpose on the bog to win and win well. He could be even better on top of the ground, not sure, but each way, happy to speck him.
10. Sharp N Smart: Sharp N Smart is a talented colt for Team Rogerson that is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday in The Phoenix where he got back but Bowman gave him a peach and he surged hard late to just miss out on picking up Political Debate. He has the upside to come and will eat up a mile. Hard to beat.
11. Robusto:Β Was okay late in the Sires, but not sure he has the class to give them a start and a beating. Reckon if they went to the 1800m 2YO race, he’d be hard to beat.
12. Basquiat: To the eye, just a win at Doomben, but his late splits were quite sharp. He’s the map horse, he has timing and has the C Waller polish. Certainly in the mix.
13. Ringmaster:Β Was good from the back in The Phoenix but I don’t think he can turn the tables on the first two.
14. Fearless Knight:Β Needs to find a maiden.
15. Lethal Thoughts: Showed good fight at Flemington when third to Brosnan. I think the mile will be fine and you do have to respect the Maher/Eustace camp. Knockout hope.
16. Sheeza Belter: Perfect ride and she bolted up in the Sires, seemingly lapping up the dry track. Needs to back it up though and as I said before, how strong was the race? Not sure.
17. Tyresa:Β She’s one at a massive price I could enteriain for wider exotics. Wide gate sealed her fate in the Sires but I actually thought she was pretty good from where she was. Sleeper if the inside gate is used to advantage.
18. Amati:Β Looked all over a winner at Randwick last start but was nabbed late by Owen County. I doubt she turns the tables but she is a filly with good talent and maps ideally.
19. West Of Africa (First Emergency):Β Nice horse, but not up to these.
