There was some great racing right across Australia on the weekend, with the highlight being the star that is James McDonald and his ride on Who Shot Thebarman in the Zipping Classic (2400m) at William Hill Park Hillside. Who caught our attention on the track? Find out down below:

FOLLOW:

Rosehill:

Race Three Number 2 High Opinion (4th):

I think this horse will be a real force in the Country Championship. This was clearly the run of the day for mine. Had to sit wide near last and got nothing to drag him up into the race yet he finished it off as well as anything. Outstanding run and look out for him in the Autumn.

Race Six Number 12 I Am Zelady (4th):

I thought there was merit in this mares first up effort. She did it too hard in front and just felt the pinch late. Trials leading in were great and she is better with something to chase, so follow her and with confidence.

(Forgive) Rosehill Race Nine Number 13 Duca Valentinois (7th):

I know some punters have had enough of him, but $2.20 to $4.20 on track…yep. If you had a ticket on him, it was confetti because the punters got it spot on earlier on with Diamond Oasis. But with Duca Valentinois, I’ll give him another chance with a firmer track next time.

William Hill Park Hillside:

Race Three Number 3 Generalife (2nd):

You can make an argument that the ride was plain, but for mine the pace just didn’t suit him at all. Pace was an absolute crawl, then he got held up badly at stages in the straight, but finished off hard. Not sure where he goes now, perhaps the paddock? But he will be a force where ever he races.

Race Six Number 1 Puccini (2nd):

Beaut run from this Group l winner, having his first start for Darren Weir. Got trapped wide most of the way and was pulling his head off. Had the audacity to hit the front and showed great fight but the in form mare Casino Dancer had the soft trip and grabbed him late. Puccini will be winning races in the Autumn/Winter.

FORGET:

Rosehill:

Race Four Number 1 Diamond Oasis (Last):

$4.40 to $7 on track and ran accordingly, but he just simply hasn’t fired a shot this time in. He can sit on the pine until further notice.

Race Six Number 6 Alart (Last):

Sat wide no cover all the way, but really, she is a pony sized three year old filly who was carrying 57kg. She looked the lay of the day and ran accordingly. She’s paid the price for being a Stakes winner, and I can’t see her winning at this level any more. She has to step up in grade.

Race Seven Number 1 Sterling City (7th):

Surely it’s retirement time for this bloke. Hadn’t done much in Melbourne, then comes to Sydney and loses to a mare who hadn’t won since the Keith Nolan last year. You won’t be winning down under Sterling City.

William Hill Park Hillside:

Kevin Heffernan Stakes:

Leaders walked and nothing from the back had a chance hence why the run of Generalife was one of the runs of the program.

Race Three Number 8 Java (6th):

Couldn’t have asked for an easy lead, but he was quickly beaten off soon after straightening and didn’t show much fight after some cheap sectionals. Had enough of him.

Race Five Number 7 Kirramosa (7th):

Plain from this mare after an excellent effort in a hot form race. Another that hasn’t won for a long time and I have finally woken up to that fact.

Race Six Number 5 Malice (5th):

Similar to Collingwood midway through the year. There is so many honourable losses you can have and this bloke has had his last one. Given every chance but was very one paced.

Deekay Weir?:

Dear TV presenters, it’s not hard to say Darren. Stop saying “D K Weir”.

Sky Racing/TAB and Market Movers:

A Market Mover, I thought, is when a horse firms in betting eg $5-$4.20. Since when is $5.50-$6.50, on numerous occasions similar to that, a Market Mover?

RIDE OF THE DAY:
William Hill Park Hillside Race Five Number 2 Who Shot Thebarman (1st)- James McDonald:
Ride of the Spring in Melbourne for mine. Sat last in a crawl, so he took off, got the lead and never looked back, winning by a space and beating a classy field. Good consolation for a luckless Melbourne Cup effort.
