The Brisbane Winter Carnival continues this Saturday at Eagle Farm with the Doomben Cup (2100m), where Zaaki is all the rage to defend his title from 12 months ago when a stunning winner.

2022 Doomben Cup Runner Preview
1. Zaaki: Not going to dive into the shorts about Zaaki, but I can’t see him getting beat. Arrogant win in the Hollindale three weeks ago. He was ridden like he was the best horse in the race and duly saluted. The potential wet track is the query, because his last couple, while he has been performing at a high level, he’s clearly not as dynamic. I think he wins, but couldn’t back with confidence.
2. The Chosen One: Comes here with fresh legs after a down the track effort in the Sydney Cup. The key with him is that he is a bomb when produced fresh. Not good enough to win but a must for multiples.
3. Kukeracha: He’s flying for Chris Waller. Found the line with real purpose in the Hollindale when a close up third. Doubt he turns the tables but runs well regardless.
4. Yonkers: Lovely ride from Nash saw him win two weeks ago at this track. He does seem to race best on the fresh side, so second up is okay and maps to get a suck run from the gate.
5. Great House: Wasn’t suited on the tight track in the Gosford Cup last start but balanced up and was strong late. Better suited here, but I think he’s prepping up for the Q22/Brisbane Cup.
6. Huetor: No secret I am seat 1A of the Huetor fan club. I think he’s a Group l winner in waiting. Wouldn’t shock me at all if it came here. He was outstanding against the pattern fresh at Randwick before going to the Hollindale, his first look against the big boys, and he measured up big time with a closing fourth to Zaaki. If he is around double figures or better, I think he almost becomes the 1×3 bet.
7. Maximal: I am fascinated by Maximal for John O’Shea. This blue blood, in the fair dinkum department, was awful in two runs during the Autumn, albeit he had excuses both times. He has been crying out for dry ground but there comes a time where you just have to run and this is the last middle distance Group l of the season. His best sees him measure up…just yet to produce it this time in.
8. Esti Feny: 2400m+ horse to my eye. Lacks a turn of foot but stays, so I think races like the Caloundra Cup/Grafton Cup would be ideal, or there could be a 2400m race in Sydney soon. He’s going well enough for that sort of race, but not here.
9. Polly Grey: Her last few runs have well and truly confirmed she is a wet tracker. Found the line with purpose in the Hollindale so with another wet track on the cards, she’s in the mix as a first four threat.
10. Coventina Bay: She’s a quality mare from NZ, but just not quite up to this level, as proven in the Hollindale, so I’m looking elsewhere.
