The first of two Group l races at Randwick this Saturday is the Canterbury Stakes (1300m) which is shaping up to be an intriguing edition with no real stand outs for the race that will be run on very testing ground.

2022 Canterbury Stakes Runner Preview
1. Zaaki: SCR
2. Kolding: Not too bad fresh in the Apollo and subsequent trial was solid, but on a heavy track, he’s going to well and truly struggle. Happy to look elsewhere.
3. Private Eye: His GF is the Doncaster but I think he has to be rated as a key threat here given his love affair with Randwick, he loves getting his toe in and looks to have trialled up really well. He’ll be around the mark and strong late.
4. Dalasan: He’s the sneaky Doncaster pony for me. Can sprint well fresh and he loves wet ground. From reports, he worked well at Rosehill on Tuesday and wouldn’t be shocked to see him in the finish.
5. Special Reward: Keeps getting underestimated and he keeps running well. Ran a beauty in the Apollo, albeit with race fitness on his side. He is another who could slide forward and has strong Soft track form. Unknown on heavy but commands respect.
6. Wild Planet: This is the blowout horse. Has done little in two runs back from a break but third up, he’s hard fit now and he is a swimmer, so he gets conditions to suit and I think his best can see him threaten.
7. Dice Roll: Dice Roll is a big watch. Nick Ryan trained gelding that resumes after a frustrating Spring. Went within a lip of winning the Rupert Clarke and that was his chance I thought to win a big one because 1600m is a bridge too far IMO. 1200m-1400m is his go in life. He’ll be strong late.
8. Laws Of Indices: Laws Of Indices is ticking along beautifully for Annabel Neasham. Resumed in the Southern Cross and just had a bit too much to do, but liked the way he finished his race off behind Lost And Running. He has eyes on the Doncaster, so not sure WFA suits him, but he’ll be strong late.
9. Forbidden Love: I think she has to be the one to beat. Ran in these conditions last Saturday in the Guy Walter and she absolutely spanked them, albeit against the Mares but she’s proven, she’s come back super and I think could get a rather soft lead.
10. Lighthouse: Definite winning chance. Former American mare who has done little wrong in Australia, and she did bolt up at her Australian debut on a quagmire track at Kyneton. Ran a beauty in the CF Orr and she maps to get the A1 run.
2022 Canterbury Stakes $100 Betting Strategy:
I’m keeping it simple here and going $25 Win/$75 Place on Lighthouse. She’s handled wet ground previously and I thought her CF Orr run was a beauty. She’s here to rock and roll.
Group l Strategy Outlay: $3770
Group l Strategy Return: $9120.6
