The fence was red hot at Moonee Valley on Friday night for the Moir Stakes (1000m), and that helped three year old filly Coolangatta get her elusive Group l win, just beating stablemate Bella Nipotina.

2022 Moir Stakes Post Race Horse Ratings
1: Coolangatta: Yes, the pattern was in her corner, but what a win. She absorbed serious heat in front and she was entitled to knock right up, but she found to fend off Bella Nipotina. Pattern helped yes, but the win was outstanding.
Rating: 8/10
2: Bella Nipotina: She was just unbelievable in defeat. Yes, they went crazy early in front, but she made a looping run, doing all the work by herself and really, the bias beat her in the end, just missing out on picking up her stablemate. She’s right on track for the Manikato.
Rating: 9/10
3: Zoustyle: He’s flying this guy. Was wide all the way, doing all the work on the speed and fought on so bravely to finish third and get a Group l placing. His chances to win a Group l are limited though and you’d think switch the gates with Coolangatta, switch the result.
Rating: 9/10
4: Generation: He was part of the mad speed battle early before easing for cover. Had his chance I thought but the run was very brave, but again, I think he was somewhat helped by the track pattern. How much? Not entirely sure. Still, a good run.
Rating: 7/10
5: Rothfire: Given zero chance with the ride. Lane got caught napping down the side by Williams aboard Bella Nipotina and just couldn’t get clear air at the right time. Total forgive IMO due to the really poor ride.
Rating: 6/10
6: Paulele: I said he was a pretender pre race. I still think that, but I also do think this wasn’t his Grand Final. 1000m isn’t his trip, he was off the bit early but picked up nicely late. Interesting to see if that’s enough to get him into The Everest or do they look at the Manikato.
Rating: 6/10
7: Mileva: She had the back of Paulele and loomed to go past him at the top of the straight but she just paddled late. Far from disgraced and did much better than what I initially thought she’d do.
Rating: 6/10
8: September Run: She got back and was held up on the turn, but had her chance to run on better I thought. That said, she’s not a 1000m horse, so I wouldn’t be binning her off this effort.
Rating: 4/10
9: Isotope: Bombed the start, which sealed her fate, so forgive and forget she went around. Look for her in a Mares race next time. She’s not up to this level.
Rating: 3/10
10: Malkovich: Was just a fraction slow to begin with and that put pay to any hope he had. Another that isn’t up to this level.
Rating: 2/10
11: The Inferno: I got sucked into him again and yes, he was zero chance with the track pattern, but even allowing for that, he was awful and he gets a life ban for me.
Rating: 0/10
12: Extremely Lucky: The run last start said he was no good at the Valley. Forget this run. He was ridden as if he had no hope and he ran accordingly. Want to see him on a bigger track and firmer footing.
Rating: 1/10
