Born into racing, Trent Edmonds learned his trade in his native Queensland and New South Wales and is now Pakenham based – giving him plenty of racing experience! He took time out to answer our QUICK QUESTIONS…
What is your first racing memory?
Going to the Gold Coast Turf Club and playing football between races. And running around with my good mate Jared Wehlow back in the mid 90s.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
Usmanov, trained him to a couple of stakes wins. We had his mother for her first few starts who was an absolute jet so when we got given Usmanov as a yearling I was super excited! He wasn’t a star but he was a fantastic horse.
Who is the best horse you’ve been involved with?
Worked for Peter Snowden in the days of Sepoy, so I’d say him; he was one of the best two-year-olds ever!
And the best horse you have seen?
Black Caviar, undefeated, say no more!
Who do you admire most in racing?
I like Peter Moody’s story, came from zero and is now a Hall Of Famer.
Who is your ‘what if’ horse?
I loved an I Am Invincible filly back in 2020. Obviously the stable had enjoyed success with Houtzen and a few others by the sire and we had trained with success for the breeder previously. Had clients to take her but acted on some bad advice and didn’t end up having a crack… turned out to be Imperatriz; we should’ve backed ourselves!
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
There’s plenty but I would be writing a novel, so I’ll go with no Sunday racing!
What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced in racing?
I enjoy hearing some crack-ups from some of the older trainers when the world wasn’t so sanitised!
What is your favourite racing moment/biggest thrill?
Houtzen winning the Magic Millions for my dad or Tyzone winning our first Group 1 in the Stradbroke; can’t split them!
What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?
Anything sport related, whether that’s playing or spectating – I can’t get enough.
What is your favourite T.V show?
Power.
Best concert you’ve seen?
The Living End at the Enmore Theatre.
What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?
Bite off more than you can chew, then chew like hell.
Favourite food?
Steak.
Favourite racecourse?
Eagle Farm.
If you weren’t a racehorse trainer what would you be doing?
Sports journalist or presenter; Jason Richardson the second!
