Race 1. (12:05) Ian Miller Hcp 1300m
3 Hydrogen Power (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a juvenile I had eyes on from the Spring but he didn’t run and was spelled. He is back this time in and looks ready to rock and roll off the back of a couple of jumpouts at Cranbourne. The latest saw him near the speed and moved very well when running second. Bred to be a nice one, he gets the inside gate and should run a positive race.
2 Gates (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a son of Frankel for Peter Moody that is on debut. He is bred to be a good one and his jumpout work suggests he will win races, which could well be the debut here. Latest jumpout was over 1000m at Pakenham and I thought he moved nicely when fourth. Bred to appreciate further but 1300m on debut I like so watch the market and see what it does.
10 Optume (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a last start winner and has the right racing pattern to give herself every chance. She took on four rivals over 1200m at Pakenham last time and led throughout. The win had merit because she was there to be beaten but found under pressure and was strong to the line in winning so 1300m should be no issue and on speed, she’ll take running down.
Race 2. (12:40) Rod Fenwick Hcp 1000m
5 Tanto (Bet Now: $SP.00) should be suited back to 1000m for Matty Ellerton. Three weeks between runs since contesting the VOBIS Gold Dash here over 1200m where she was near the speed throughout and tried her guts out but was no match late for She Dances, running third, beaten over five lengths, but the run was full of merit. Like her back to 1000m and is hard to beat.
1 Bay Thirteen (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a quality filly for Matt Laurie that resumes. She hasn’t raced since Oaks Day at Flemington when near the speed and battled on really well in defeat when a narrow third to Aitch Two Oh. Has had two jumpouts to get ready for the return, the latest seeing her win over 700m at Mornington. Class of the field and handles wet ground, so she’s likeable.
6 Written Swoosh (Bet Now: $SP.00) certainly has the engine under the hood to take this race out, and potentially better races. Phillip Stokes trains this filly, who has had two career outings. Debuted in the Blue Diamond Preview last year when second to Miss Roseiano before having a break and resuming at The Valley in July when bombing the start and that sealed her fate behind Winnertakesitall. Has jumped out really well leading in and with her best, I think she’s the one.
Race 3. (13:15) Darren Gauci (Bm78) 1000m
Fresh legs and back to 1000m are two big ticks for 6 Senegalia (Bet Now: $SP.00). Maher/Eustace trained mare that is several weeks between runs since racing down the straight at Flemington against the Mares where she raced over 1100m and tried hard but just couldn’t quite finish it off when a close up fifth to Veranskova. 1000m horse IMO and back to that trip here, and a bending track, she is good enough to take this out.
2 Our Heidi (Bet Now: $SP.00) has done little wrong this time in for Phillip Stokes. This mare hasn’t raced for four weeks since racing over 1200m here where she was on speed throughout and tried her guts out but couldn’t quite finish it off when a narrow second to Lafargue. Like her back to 1000m with fresh legs and with her racing style, she’ll give herself every chance.
12 Lady Canuck (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a progressive mare for the Corstens team that is heading in the right direction and deserves a crack in town. She has won her past two, winning the maiden two back at Avoca before going to Geelong where she got into a decent battle and in a driving finish, she was able to finish best. Down in the weights and should be fine on wet ground, she’s in with a shout.
Race 4. (13:50) Rod Griffiths (Bm100) 1000m
3 Unflinching (Bet Now: $SP.00) is unknown on wet ground but Team Freedman has placed this horse to advantage. He has been kept on ice since a dominant all the way win over 955m on William Reid Night at The Valley, producing sustained speed to the fore. If the wet track is okay for him, with his racing style, he’ll take running down I am sure.
Last time 4 Bless Her (Bet Now: $SP.00) won, Moses was parting the sea, but I do think she has come back well and shouldn’t be totally dismissed. She ran two weeks back in the Hareeba at Mornington and was solid from off the speed without threatening when fourth to Jigsaw. She did get quite keen in the run there so if she can relax this time around, especially with rain forecast, she’s good enough to take this out.
8 Big Day Out (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a knockout hope. He hasn’t raced since late March when a closing fourth in the Flat Knacker over 900m at Albury behind a proven city horse, Sparring. He gets in really well at the weights, he’ll be strong late off the fast speed and a win wouldn’t entirely shock with him. Wouldn’t be dismissing him.
Race 5. (14:25) Jra (Bm78) 1600m
10 Thought Provoking… (Bet Now: $SP.00) surely she is the one to beat. Resumed two weeks ago in a similar race at Mornington and she can easily go on the podium as the sickest beat of 2023. Should have bolted in but just had no luck at all in the straight, driving hard late to just miss out on the win. Bigger track, run under the belt, if she gets clear air this time around, she’s the one to beat.
3 Unusual Culture (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a mare who has done a really good job this time in and commands respect. Last run was over 1500m here back on April 10 where Hefel gave her a 12/10 steer and the mare repaid the ride by driving hard late from the suck run to win narrowly but impressively. The end of 1600m, I think, is a query with her, but she finds a race where the depth isn’t strong to the eye.
7 Defiant Diva (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win one for Team Corstens. She has placed her past three, the latest being over 1500m at Sandown on the Easter Monday meeting where she was given a peach by Williams and was there to win 200m out but couldn’t hold out the finale of the very handy mare Unusual Culture. Consistent, around the mark and is a key winning chance IMO.
Race 6. (15:00) Selangor Turf Club Hcp 1800m
2 Dashing (Bet Now: $SP.00), I think, will have no issue with 1800m should they lead and/or be on speed and rolling. It’s rare to say that Linda Meech slaughters a front runner, but she well and truly butchered the ride on this horse in the Mornington Guineas. Went far too slow in front and was left a sitting shot late for Lethal Thoughts. Think with a more positive steer, he’ll take beating.
8 Tapa Capall (Bet Now: $SP.00) is hard fit now and is racing like a rise to 1800m will be ideal. He is another that comes through the Mornington Guineas where he wasn’t really suited by the race shape but he kept finding the line to run third to Lethal Thoughts. Has the gate to settle much closer and is a winner on heavy ground so a wet track is no issue.
11 Great Northern (Bet Now: $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1800m for Simon Zahra. She defied a notable betting drift to win fresh at Pakenham over 1400m before going to the Mornington Guineas where she was a big price but I thought ran a very credible race in defeat behind Lethal Thoughts. Did run well at 2000m in the Spring so 1800m here is fine and has good upside.
Race 7. (15:40) King's Coronation Cup (Bm100) 1800m
Beware the unbeaten horse so giving serious respect to 13 Globe (Bet Now: $SP.00) for the Price/Kent camp. 3/3 to start his career, the latest being over 1800m here where he led throughout and gave nothing else a look in, winning by a space and doing it quite comfortably. Good test here against some likely types, but he might be very good and if so, he wins this.
4 Port Philip (Bet Now: $SP.00) swims so he gets conditions to suit. He ran two weeks ago in the Mornington Cup where the track was very much on the firm side and he couldn’t let down on it when down the track behind Right You Are. Back in trip is negated by the fact the track will be truly wet and that is when he races best. He can improve out of sight.
Fitter and up to 1800m, I am keen to see how 6 Teewaters (Bet Now: $SP.00) goes. Archie Alexander trains this gelding, that resumed over the mile here three weeks ago and I thought was more than a pass mark in defeat behind Pinstriped after getting back to near last in the run. He was never a threat but didn’t mind the way he found the line. Has a good second up record and is suited up in trip. Dangerous.
Race 8. (16:20) Catanach's Jewellers (Bm100) 1600m
3 Gunstock (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a quality galloper for Price/Kent that resumes. He ended last prep on a high when taking out the Coongy in dominant fashion on Thousand Guineas Day, bypassing the Caulfield Cup and instead going for a spell. His recent jumpout work has been strong and 1600m fresh on likely heavy ground is an ideal recipe for him. Leaning his way.
2 Pinstriped (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found winning form and he can certainly go on with it now. He ran a few weeks ago at Sandown in the VOBIS Gold Mile where it was D-Day for him and he passed with flying colours, giving them an absolute spanking by a space and did it with plenty in hand. He has a tricky draw to overcome, but is the class of the field and is here off a win.
4 So Si Bon (Bet Now: $SP.00) is getting on in years but he is usually around the mark in races like this. I was keen on him running well in the VOBIS Gold Mile but he just didn’t let down on the shifty track and was a bit on the plain side late in the piece behind Pinstriped. His All Star Mile run was a beauty and off that, he’d go close in this. Just depends where he is at.
Race 9. (16:53) Ladbrokes Racing Club (Bm78) 1300m
12 Our Redente (Bet Now: $SP.00) gets the nod in the get out. Jerome Hunter trains this gelding, who was backed with confidence when resuming two weeks ago on Mornington Cup Day and I thought he did a really good job in defeat given he was off the bit and chasing from the outset but kept finding the line behind dominant winner Outback Action. Fitter, drawn out, potentially the right part of the track, he’ll take beating.
18 Stormcolt (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a bit of an unknown on wet ground but is a horse in pretty good form. He won a couple of races on the bounce before going to the VOBIS Gold Sprint when near the speed and fought on pretty well but was no match for them late in the piece behind D’Jumbuck. If the wet ground is no issue, he has the right form to be around the mark.
19 Sig Positano (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Patrick Payne trained galloper that resumes. He is best suited over a bit further, but the stable is finding form and are firing with their first up/fresh runners, so I wouldn’t pen him. He hasn’t raced since Boxing Day here when back near last in the run and making up solid headway without threatening behind Savannah Cloud. He’s had three jumpouts under the belt to get ready so he’s had a good grounding and will be strong at the end.
