Karaka 2023 Book 1 is 29 to 31 January, and Pencarrow’s 20-strong draft has six yearlings by super-sires Snitzel, Savabeel, Exceed And Excel, Pierro, Written Tycoon and Darci Brahma.
Eagerly awaited as the opening lot on Day 2 is the October foaled bay colt by Snitzel from the Gr1 winning Johar mare Guiseppina, being the family of NZ 2000 Guineas winner The Pooka.
With young-gun Vadamos already having the Gr1 winner La Crique, his August filly sells on Day 2, being from the More Than Ready mare Paris and from the NZ Filly of The Year Insouciant.
In topping first-season honours at the Magic Millions with his filly making $1m, Too Darn Hot has Lot 433 on Day 1 a half-sister to stakes placed winner Podravina, from the Gr3 winner Posavina.
Champion UK sprinter Blue Point averaged $378,125 with his first yearlings at the Magic Millions, and Day 2 has a filly from the winning Zabeel mare Mejave Aster, the family of Lafleur, Amarjllis.
In celebrating Karaka 2023 with 13 colts and seven fillies selling in Book 1, Pencarrow says ‘its bloodlines that have left a lasting legacy on the Australasian racing and breeding scene.’
There’s no passing that the most influential of these families traces to Richebourg, who’s best known as a dam, granddam and great-granddam of outstanding performers over the last decades.
In being by Vice Regal, Richebourg went onto to produce six winners include the Queen of The Turf and Hong Kong International winner Romanee Conti, a daughter of the famous Sir Tristram.
With Romanee Conti going onto produce the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup heroine Ethereal in her seven winners, it was Ethereal herself who went onto foal four stakes performers.
Her unraced daughter Sopra Tutto have Gr1 performers Eleonora and Supera, and its Eleonoa this season had her daughter Ethereal Star win the Listed 2YO Challenge Stakes at Pukekohe.
Romanee Conti’s three-quarter-sister Grand Echezeaux, by Zabeel, won the Australasian Oaks and is the dam of four stakes performers, including the $1.1m yearling Darci Brahma, by Danehill.
With Darci Brahma winning five Gr1 races and being a leading sire, his blood-brother Burgundy, by Redoute’s Choice, was a $1.3m yearling, winning five stakes races and also a success at stud.
Our Echezeaux is a full-sister to Grand Echezeaux and is the dam of stakes-winning Pencarrow mares Dolmabache and Pure Elegance, both by Redoute’s Choice, and Cote d’Or, by Makfi.
La Tache is another of Richebourg’s daughters, and is the granddam of Gr2 winner Bellini Rose, by Faltaat, who in turn produced the Gr1 winner Howard Be Thy Name, by Redoute’s Choice.
