Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Drosselmeyer has been retired to stand at his owners’ stud in Kentucky.
Also the winner of last year’s Grade One Belmont Stakes at three, Drosselmeyer will stand at Winstar Farm for $US17,500. ($A17,562).
The four-year-old son of Distorted Humor won $2.7 million during his career, making him his sire’s top earner.
WinStar president and chief executive Elliott Walden said Drosselmeyer came out of the Classic on November 5 in such good shape it was hard to decide whether to retire him.
“We knew he had what it took to be one of the top older horses in the country and I think we saw that with how he came to hand in his last two starts, so it made for a difficult decision,” Walden said.
He said it was ultimately determined to let the horse go out as a Classic champion.
