What the jockeys said after the running of the Group One $6 million Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

CHRISTOPHE LEMAIRE (Dunaden) 1st – “I was a bit anxious (after the race), I know it was a bit close. I was told maybe the horse on the outside win so I was a bit disappointed because the horse gave everything, but then they said you win. It’s a great, great moment.”

MICHAEL RODD (Red Cadeaux) 2nd – “I would have preferred to get beaten by half a length than get beaten like that. He’s run really well. We had a beautiful run through the race. I saved all the ground and came out when I wanted to. He felt fantastic, I was able to hold him up until about the 400 (metres) then he showed a turn of foot I wasn’t expecting. He’s tried really hard, it’s taken a good horse to beat him, it hurts.”

COREY BROWN (Lucas Cranach) 3rd – “He ran super. He had all the breaks, he got the perfect run in the race and I peeled him out at the 600 metres and travelled up. Wasn’t to be, he had every chance. The issues he had prior to the Caulfield Cup may have been the difference. Without that in the picture, he might have been a couple of lengths better horse. He did really well.”

GERALD MOSSE (Americain) 4th – “I think the ground was a bit firm for him. He gave me a good acceleration in the straight but he started to get tired in the last 50 metres with the weight and the ground. He’s very honest and tried his best.”

DAMIEN OLIVER (Manighar) 5th – “He ran really well. He looked a real chance straightening up and fought on really well. It was a brave fifth.”

WILLIAM BUICK (Lost In The Moment) 6th – “Delighted. I was very happy. The horse gave me everything. I had a great run through. He had every chance and ran his heart out. He’s probably just not quite at this level yet but he is a horse on the up and this must surely be a target in the future.”

SILVESTRE DE SOUSA (Fox Hunt) 7th – “Ran a good race. He’s had a hard season and hit a flat spot from the 1000 metres but he ran a good race.”

DEAN YENDALL (Niwot) 8th – “He ran out of his skin. We got a great run in transit, I produced him when I needed to produce him and he stuck it out really well. He went tremendous.”

BRAD RAWILLER (Unusual Suspect) 9th – “He ran fantastic. There was a scrimmage early, he just got outsprinted when they dashed and he just kept going to the line at the one speed.”

STEVEN KING (At First Sight) 10th – “He gave me a beautiful ride and was nice and relaxed. He’s probably just a question mark at two miles (3200m). He paddled a bit from the 400 metres onwards.”

DARREN BEADMAN (Precedence) 11th – “He ran well, he just wouldn’t settle.”

DWAYNE DUNN (Drunken Sailor) 12th – “Had a great run in transit, just didn’t run the trip.”

CRAIG NEWITT (The Verminator) 13th – “He gave me a great ride. He just didn’t run the trip. He ran really good until halfway up the straight.”

CHRIS MUNCE (Tullamore) 14th – “He was a bit tardy out of the gates, he went up when they flew open. He struck trouble on a few different occasions but I thought on the home turn he was going to make a run on them. His run just gave way in the straight.”

BRETT PREBBLE (Moyenne Corniche) 15th – “He switched off quite nice. At the 600 (metres) I thought I was going to be in the first five but he just got tired towards the end.”

CHRIS SYMONS (Saptapadi) 16th – “We were always going to go back from barrier 22, so just half missed it, skipped across their heels, had a lovely run. I thought the horse went fair and I was happy enough with the effort.”

TIM CLARK (Older Than Time) 17th – “I thought she ran alright for an outsider. I rode her quiet and she worked home and passed a few. She ran the two miles but probably wasn’t classy enough for them.”

GLYN SCHOFIELD (Hawk Island) 18th – “I copped a bit of interference but he got back a bit, travelled well, gave a bit of a sight but wasn’t good enough.”

JIM CASSIDY (Illo) 19th – “We anticipated being fourth or fifth but with Tullamore rearing at the start and Glass Harmonium missing it, it took all the pace out of the race so with a lap to go I was in front where I didn’t want to be. Our run was tempo-related but take nothing away from the winner, it turned out to be a good Cup.”

NEIL CALLAN (Jukebox Jury) 20th – “No excuses really. We got a nice position forward and he felt in a nice rhythm all the way round then he turned it up in the straight. We’ll come back again.”

LUKE NOLEN (Shamrocker) 21st – “Found a nice spot midfield three deep with cover but she started to give ground from the 1400.”

LISA CROPP (Glass Harmonium) 22nd – “He missed the start. I don’t think he stayed, we got a fair enough trip into it but he never looked likely from the turn.”

KERRIN MCEVOY (Modun) 23rd and last – “I had an ordinary run in the race, I didn’t get any cover and he was just a bit keen throughout the trip. Because of that he didn’t run the trip out.”
