Tumult has been a significant firmer to make a winning debut at Flemington on Saturday and continue his sire’s impressive season.

The Peter Snowden-trained Tumult opened at $4.40 with TAB fixed odds earlier in the week but was into $2.35 on Friday for the Spotless Plate (1100m).

The colt is by Exceed And Excel out of Excited Angel with assistant trainer Paul Snowden saying the youngster had thrown more to his sire than the veteran mare who had her first foal in 1996.

A multiple stakes winner, Excited Angel ran second to champion sprinter Schillaci in the 1993 Futurity stakes and third behind Paris Lane and Jeune in the 1994 Mackinnon.

The only stakes winner she has produced so far is her first foal, Aquiver, winner of the 2001 Ballarat Cup.

“He’s a nice horse who shows speed and probably shouldn’t, but in saying that he is by Exceed And Excel,” Snowden said.

“He’s thrown more to that side.”

Exceed And Excel’s daughters came out on top in this year’s two-year-old triple crown, with Overreach winning the Golden Slipper and Guelph taking out the Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes.

Tumult finished second in a recent Werribee barrier trial.

“He trialled OK and was still quite soft. He’s improved from that,” Snowden said.

“Off a good draw he should be hard to beat.”

The stable’s only other runners at the Flemington meeting are Parthian and Offenders in the Secondbite Fresh Food Rescue Handicap and Snowden said it wouldn’t surprise if either of them won.

Parthian was a close last-start second in the Listed Pink Ribbon Cup and has 3kg claiming apprentice Tom Sadler aboard while Offenders will be out to bounce back after his fifth in the same race.

“The key for Parthian is the claim,” Snowden said.

“It looks like he could dictate again.

“Offenders ran really well first-up but was only plain last start. Maybe it was second-up but we were expecting a bit more from him.

“Hopefully he can pick up and run as well as he can this time.”
