There will be a sense of urgency surrounding the return to racing of promising sprinter-miler Somepin Anypin.
Somepin Anypin, high up in Doncaster Mile betting, starts his run towards the $2 million race in the Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm On Saturday.
When Doncaster weights were released on Monday, Somepin Anypin found himself clumped with 167 horses on the 52kg limit.
Most of them will be need to prove their Doncaster Mile bona fides and Somepin Anypin’s trainer Gary Portelli is well aware of the task that faces his Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner.
“We are a long way down (the order of entry) and he’ll have to win one of these races (ballot-exempt races coming up) to qualify,” Portelli said.
Portelli said the Liverpool City Cup promised to be one of two make-or-break runs for Somepin Anypin.
“First-up and second-up will be where I think we decide if he is a genuine Doncaster hope,” he said.
“He needs to come back a better horse I think because of the stronger opposition.
“It’s a different type of racing once you get up to this level.
“Put it this way if he can’t earn his spot he won’t be going around. Simple.
“No good running in it if he can’t win it.”
The Liverpool City Cup winner escapes the Doncaster Mile ballot.
A Jim Cassidy mount, Somepin Anypin is one of 17 entries for the Liverpool City Cup in which he has been asked to carry 55.5kg.
“I’ve got him as good as you can get him without racing,” Portelli said.
“He races well first-up but he gets better as he gets into a campaign, no doubt.”
Portelli is desperate for Sydney’s waterlogged tracks to improve.
“His best runs have been when the tracks have been dry,” he said.
“He’s one of those horses who has always been able to run time, fast sectionals all the way.
“I’ll be looking forward to it drying up over the next month.”
Somepin Anypin resumes after ending a Sydney spring campaign with a hat-trick of wins.
The four-year-old was spelled after his four-length Hawkesbury victory in preference to contesting the Villiers Stakes.
Last year’s Liverpool City Cup winner Triple Elegance is among Saturday’s entries along with international Group One performer Happy Zero who has 59.5kg topweight.
