Juvenile Schiffer has won over $250,000 in stakes but trainer Gerald Ryan is keen for her to put some more money in the bank.
Schiffer, who will kick off her campaign in Saturday’s Rosebud Fillies Preview (1100m) at Warwick Farm, has collected all but $42,000 of her prizemoney in Magic Millions races.
“That’s why she’s come back now, she’s won a quarter of a million dollars in stakes but only $42,000 of it qualifies for a ballot,” Ryan said.
Schiffer was runner-up to Karuta Queen in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Wyong in December and finished third to the same filly in the Gold Coast Magic Millions in January.
Sandwiched in between was a victory over subsequent Group One winner Benfica at Randwick on Boxing Day.
Ryan said Schiffer had furnished further during her break and was headed towards the four-race Princess Series which kicks off with the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on August 20, a race Ryan won with Our Sweet Moss in 2004.
“She’s come back very well, she’s bigger and stronger,” he said of Schiffer.
“She’s a lot more settled, I’ve been teaching her to settle this time in and she’s done it.
“And she does go through the wet, she’s shown it at home.”
That ability will hold her in good stead with Warwick Farm rated a slow (7) on Wednesday and further rain forecast for the rest of the week.
Schiffer is by Ryan’s Group One-winning sprinter Snitzel out of unraced Montjeu mare Mohave and Ryan believes she will be effective up to 1600m.
The Group One Flight Stakes in Sydney and Thousand Guineas in Melbourne, both run over that distance, are her major goals.
“She will run in this race on Saturday and then the four (Princess Series) fillies races along with the Thousand Guineas and then go to the paddock,” Ryan said.
Schiffer will be one of two runners for Ryan in the fillies division of the Rosebud Preview along with Follow My Lead.
The latter returned from a let-up with a sound third in a midweek event at Randwick earlier this month.
“She’s hard to place. She’s won a race and been placed in town a couple of times but she’s a short-course horse and there aren’t enough races around for her,” Ryan said.
Tommy Berry rides Follow My Lead with Brenton Avdulla aboard Schiffer.
Their unraced stablemate Fast Shanti, a full-sister to dual Group winner Rothesay, will make her debut at Hawkesbury on Sunday.
