Jim Delaney has just three of his own horses in work at Taree but got the better of the city slickers with homebred Floral Insight at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
“I’ve only got three horses, I only race our own,” Delaney said after Floral Insight took out the Vinery Stud Handicap (1000m) with apprentice Sam Clipperton aboard.
“This bloke is a family horse, we’d been breeding from the mare (Please Believe) for a while but I don’t have her anymore.
“She disappeared out of a paddock about three years ago – somebody liked her more than me.”
Prior to Wednesday’s victory, Floral Insight’s six career wins had all come on his home track at Taree.
Delaney, 70, admits he doesn’t fancy travelling down to Sydney but could return on Saturday week with the consistent gelding.
“I took this bloke to Randwick on Melbourne Cup day and he ran second. He’s an honest horse and picked up 19 straight cheques,” Delaney said.
“There’s a race here on Saturday week but I don’t know whether to come back for that or give him a break. He’s been racing since May but you wouldn’t know it. He’s a tough horse.”
Floral Insight ($9) defeated Esprit Lad ($31) by a neck with Tapakeg ($17) another short head away third.
