The promise of a $100,000 victory bonus has attracted 24 nominations for Saturday’s Inglis sales-sponsored race at Canterbury, including bargain-buy Proper Madam who will make the trip from Victoria.
A $35,000 yearling at Melbourne’s Premier Sale, Proper Madam has earned $150,000 so far and can almost double that if she wins on Saturday.
The filly surprised her trainer Jason Warren with her last-start victory in a similar race for horses sold by Inglis at Caulfield in heavy conditions he didn’t think would suit and he said he had no concerns about bringing her to Sydney for another new experience.
“Provided she works well on Tuesday morning, she’ll be on her way to Sydney,” Warren said.
“Her last start was her best performance yet. I was worried because the Stratums don’t seem to handle the wet but she got through it super.
“We have our own training track just outside of Mornington and she works in the opposite direction every second day so that won’t be a concern.
“She is a tractable filly and I think she can do well. We are coming for the money!”
The money is even more attractive for BOBS nominated horses with an added $20,000 on offer to the winner.
Anthony Cummings will make every attempt to stop Warren’s bid, nominating seven horses including Diamond Earth who finished out of the placings in the Lightning Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday.
The trip to Sydney will be a one-off for Proper Madam who will be aimed at stakes races over the Melbourne spring carnival but stablemate Pronto Pronto is in line for a two-start campaign targeting the $1 million Golden Rose.
The VRC Sires’ Produce runner-up won a barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday morning, pleasing Warren who will bring him north for the Listed Rosebud (1200m) on August 11.
“The track was very heavy for the trial and he handled himself well,” Warren said.
“He will go to Sydney for the Rosebud on Saturday week to see how he goes in the reverse direction.
“All going well I will bring home for a race at Caulfield and then back to Sydney for the Golden Rose third-up.”
James Winks rode Pronto Pronto in the trial and will be aboard Proper Madam for her Sydney assignment.
“James does a lot of work for me,” Warren said.
“He will stay with her during the spring and hopefully we can get black type with her.”
