Cranbourne trainer Greg Eurell will saddle up his first ever runner at Wagga on Monday, with Threebytwo to contest the Benchmark 65 over 1400 metres.
Eurell, who has produced several outstanding gallopers including Apache Cat and Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker, sent the lightly raced four-year-old north in search of better track conditions with wet weather affecting Victorian tracks.
Stable foreman Tye Poulton said Threebytwo could even stay for another run or two before returning home.
“There are just no suitable tracks down here for him at the moment,” Poulton said.
“It’s so wet they’ve even called off the local football game and it’s a winter sport.
“We sent Threebytwo north hoping for drier tracks. If it stays wet down here he may stay for another run or two.
After showing great promise early in his career, the gelding suffered a suspensory ligament injury in early 2011.
“It didn’t bow but we tipped him out for six months in the paddock and have just brought him up slowly,” Poulton said.
“There are no issues with the leg now. He had a trial and a couple of jump-outs before starting this preparation.”
“The horse is fit and well.”
Threebytwo resumed with a 13-1/2 13th to Out Of The Fire over 1216m at Mornington on June 11 being out for 18 months.
“That was on a heavy track over and unsuitable distance,” Poulton said.
“Stepping up to 1400 metres will suit him better.
“Class-wise he’s got a fair bit on his rivals.”
Threebytwo, who will be ridden by Nick Souquet, has won two of his six starts including one at Sandown.
