Tabcorp punters placed $26 million worth of bets on Black Caviar during her unbeaten run, an analysis of TAB wagering patterns on her career has revealed.
The amount, which includes the TAB’s pari-mutuel and fixed odds wagering platforms, confirms Black Caviar’s obvious appeal with Australian punters despite the restrictive nature of her starting odds.
In all, TAB fixed odds wrote 43,576 individual bets during her 25 starts, ranging in price from $3 to $1.04.
As a measure of her rise as a racing phenomenon, more than 30 per cent of those bets were placed in her final four starts, including 5,120 individual investments in the TJ Smith Stakes.
A $1 all-up investment on her 25 starts with the wagering firm would have returned $443.
The biggest bet held on Black Caviar was $250,000 at $1.14 which was placed on last Saturday’s TJ Smith Stakes.
A $30,000 bet on Black Caviar at $1.80 before the 2010 Schweppes Stakes gave the TAB its worst result on the wonder mare.
The average fixed odds bet on Black Caviar was $270, a figure the TAB says was distorted by an unusually high number of bets of more than $10,000.
