Adam Page gives us his brief preview for Saturday’s Group 3 Victoria Handicap at Caulfield racecourse, view his full race preview and selections.
Group One winner Set For Fame is the $4.60 favourite, ahead of the bookies pal Carrara at $4.80. Then it’s the South Australian Budriguez at $5.50 and Zedi Knight at $6.50.
$11 is being offered about Time Matters and I think that is superb value. He has had the four runs this time in and the longest he has been away from the winner in those four runs was 2.75 lengths last start when finishing second behind Budriguez in a Listed race in Adelaide. They meet again and Time Matters meets Budriguez 2kg better at the weights and the track will be dead/slow at least so that makes the case for Time Matters all the more better. He looks a great each-way bet.
Red Colossus has a tidy first up record with a win and a placing from three starts. He contested some good races last prep and did finish fifth behind So You Think. He has trialled nicely and he looked fit enough to suggest he’ll be running a strong first up race. He is at $10 and $3.07 for the place. He’ll get the right run and is weighted well.
Set For Fame at her best would take care of these comfortably, but gee she has let her supporters down for a while now. Has a very good record on her home track (five starts for three wins and a second) and the only unplaced effort was in the Oakleigh Plate when she was caught wide with no cover. She finished last in the Queen Of The Turf behind More Joyous and she did struggle. Have to take her on trust but tha trust is wearing very thin.
Skiddaw Peak was the real eye-catcher behind Zedi Knight last start after being run off his legs before finding the line strongly. If he is able to sit closer here, look for him to be swooping on them late. If the track firms up, he’ll be right in the think of things.
