An eight race twilight program has been assembled for Sandown on Wednesday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:40) Ladbrokes Back Yourself Handicap 1400m
This race is all about 2 Holster (Bet Now: $7.00) for me. If he brings anything near his best, he wins. The Yargi team have him now after formerly being with Team Hawkes. First up last prep he was grabbed in the last couple of strides by Hit The Shot, who went on to run so well in the Derby, so that form is A1. His two Mornington jumpouts have been strong and stable the last 12 months has a 26% ROI with their first up runners.
10 Bad Influence (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Maher/Eustace trained filly that had jumped out well enough prior to resuming at Terang where she was a notable drifter late in betting. Got back off the speed and closed off well enough late when second to Tereras in a solid overall time relative to the meeting. Fitter, up to 1400m and should get a lovely run from the gate.
7 The Admiral (Bet Now: $16.00) is an interesting runner. Michael Moroney trains this three year old, who hasn’t raced since his debut back in June at Wangaratta when really struggling on a heavy track so forget he went around behind Jacobe Queen. The recent jumpout says it was 800m, but he was ridden out past the post, so it was more of a 1000m jumpout, and looked pretty good. Watch the market.
Race 2. (16:15) IVE > Print Handicap 1300m
Happy to be with 3 Audacious Heart (Bet Now: $6.00). Good on debut at Mornington when third to subsequent city winner Passionate Lass before going to Geelong when on speed and when Moor asked for the effort, she looked home, only to be bloused late by a very impressive looking Maid Of Iron. Should be positive from the gate and proving hard to run down.
12 Parure (Bet Now: $8.00) is a well bred filly for the Hayes/Dabernig team and Coolmore that resumes. Hasn’t raced since her debut back in February at Ballarat when far from disgraced in defeat behind Madam Mischief in a race which has produced eight subsequent winners, so that’s quite strong form, and she went super in a recent Flemington jumpout win. Stable gets Olly to steer, watch the market.
2 Auclert (Bet Now: $21.00) should appreciate the rise to 1300m at start two for the Bec Waymouth stable. Debuted over 1200m at Pakenham where she was tucked in behind the speed and got out in time to threaten. Closed off well and in an encouraging debut, finishing third to Diamonds. Not sure she wins, but can fill a first four spot.
Race 3. (16:50) Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (64) 2400m
6 Pay The Man (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Team McEvoy trained mare that is racing like she will eat up the 2400m. Got her second career win out of the way last time out at Murray Bridge over 2000m in a moderate Maiden/Class One, but it was the manner in which she put them away that impressed me. Really drew clear late and won by a space, five lengths the official margin. Off that, eats up 2400m and has more upside than most.
9 Lady In The Sky (Bet Now: $4.60) is racing very well at the moment. Was a few weeks between runs when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago and I loved the way she closed off from the back when third to Saint Eustace after getting a mile back in the run. If she can settle a pair or two closer in the run, think she’ll be very dangerous.
10 Miss Five Hundred (Bet Now: $6.50) gets the Blinkers back on and that could well spark improvement from this mare for a stable that is in somewhat of a purple patch at the moment. She comes through the Saint Eustace race where she got back in the run and didn’t come on. Gets a jockey upgrade and Blinkers on, so she’s a definite improver.
Race 4. (17:25) Ladbrokes Easy Form Handicap (70) 1600m
2 Abreed (Bet Now: $2.40) looks a smart animal for Andrew Noblet and I think he can make it 2/2 here. Loved his debut win at Geelong. Was in the inferior ground but he still managed to finish strongest and what i loved was the last 75m. Once he won the race, he drew clear and pricked the ears on the line. Think he’s above average and can take this out.
5 Aswaat (Bet Now: $2.80) looks suited up to the mile for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Both runs back from a break have come over 1400m, the latest being here two weeks ago when good late behind Here To Shock. Off that effort, he should appreciate the 1600m and he does have some solid form around him. Hard to beat.
4 Wise Dragon (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Grahame Begg trained three year old that was 2000m back to the mile when racing at Moonee Valley and I thought he was far from disgraced in defeat I thought when fourth to Seb Song. That race rated okay relative to the meeting and now dropping back to midweek grade, he’s likeable.
Race 5. (18:00) Welcome Back Members Handicap (64) 1000m
Best on the program for me here in the shape of 9 Jabali Ridge (Bet Now: $6.00), resuming for the Price/Kent team. Talented three year old that resumes, having not raced since August 15 when a solid second to an above average filly in Celestine, who has since been Stakes performed. Closed off well in a Sandown jumpout and went super in winning a Traralgon trial last week. If he’s anywhere near right, which he looks like he is, then he wins.
1000m is a specialist and the short course racing does appear the go in life for 1 The Mobot (Bet Now: $5.00). Hasn’t raced since February when racing at this track/distance and finishing a close up fourth in what looked a solid race on paper and the form out it, overall, has been solid. Liked the recent jumpout win at Ballarat and has an in form Will Price to steer.
3 Ididitforlove (Bet Now: $6.50) is the big watch here. Son of Foxwedge for Patrick Payne that resumes, having not raced since May 9 at Caulfield on testing ground when pulling up with excuses post race behind the above average Hi Stranger. Just one soft jumpout to get ready for his return is the concern, so I’d watch the market and see if it has him ready to go.
Race 6. (18:30) Tile Importer Handicap (64) 1300m
I think you have to be with 1 Witchfulthinking (Bet Now: $2.40). She didn’t beat much first up at Terang over 1400m…but wow, how well did she do it. Bolted up by eight lengths and relative to the day, she has absolutely smashed the clock in winning. Back 100m in trip is no issue and with the claim, can see her running along in front and giving them something to chase. if she runs up to the first up performance, they won’t be beating her.
Just one soft jumpout for 2 Soaring Eagle (Bet Now: $11.00) to get ready for her return, but she has the solid Saturday metro form, so she commands respect. Resumes for David Briedoake and while she didn’t win last prep, she was close up in tidy races, including a Leilani Final behind a Stakes class mare in Music Bay. If she can use the gate, she’ll take some holding out and is my lone insurance in the quaddie to go with Witchfulthinking.
For wider multiples, I could entertain 11 Sanctuaire (Bet Now: $26.00). Tony Noonan trained mare that resumed over 1100m at Bendigo in what was a solidly run race for the class and I thought she worked home pretty well when fourth to Vistabelle. Gets a senior jock back on now and if she can use gate one, she’s a must for exotics.
Race 7. (19:00) Ladbrokes Switch Handicap (64) 1800m
On top in a very tricky race is 2 Nordic Symphony (Bet Now: $14.00). She has some good form around her and given she has a rating of 73, dropping to a 64 and only being 3.5kg over the minimum, she’s very well in. Recent efforts in Country Cups have been more than sound and think she’ll only run well here against this lot.
10 Austrata (Bet Now: $5.00) gets the Blinkers first time and that could be the significant gear change that sparks him into action. Just got there fresh in a Kilmore maiden before going to the Valley where he seemed to lose the plot on the turn before balancing up again and working home okay behind New Choice. Can bounce back here for sure.
The third up record of 8 Igniter (Bet Now: $11.00) keeps him somewhat in the mix. Hasn’t really set the world on fire in two runs back from a spell, but interesting that last time out at Pakenham, he was backed with real confidence but failed to fire a shot. He’s a dry tracker only so he should get that here, and his third up form reads very well.
Race 8. (19:30) Quayclean Handicap (64) 1400m
Like 4 Fundraiser (Bet Now: $2.60) in the get out. Hayes/Dabernig trained four year old that just needed the run fresh at Geelong when third to The Astrologist before going to Mornington where he was given a 12/10 by Stackhouse and the horse repaid the ride by bolting up and running good time. Already a couple of winners to come from the race and here, I can see Lane pressing forward, getting near the speed comfortably and proving hard to beat.
11 Excelleration (Bet Now: $4.20) is the big query here. Richard Cully trained gelding that debuted over 1400m at Terang and the time didn’t stack up well with the time that Witchfulthinking ran, but gee he looked a good horse in winning, and I reckon that maiden had some depth to it. Draws wide, but he might just be a smart one.
6 High ‘N’ Dry (Bet Now: $31.00) is better suited over further, but he does have some solid first up form. Ellerton/Zahra trained gelding that resumes, having not raced since May 30 when down the track at Caulfield behind Mahamedeis. His two jumpouts have been quite solid enough and two first up runs ago, he placed behind Furrion, which reads well.
