Race 1. (15:24) Crown Towers Plate 1200m
10 Street Fury (Bet Now: $2.25) on top for me in the opener. Quality filly for the Pearce team who resumed at the midweeks over the 1000m here and she was very impressive from the back, letting down with real purpose to overhaul them late. Up to the 1200m looks ideal and she should only improve off that resumption.
1 Arrum Boy (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented type for the Steve Wolfe yard who ran in the Placid Ark a fortnight back and worked home well from the back late in the piece to run third to Ocean Jewel in a blanket go. Looks ideally placed back to this level, he draws to get a suck run off the gate, and he is well in at the weights.
3 Kentoo (Bet Now: $19.00) is four weeks between runs since scoring a surprise yet impressive win at this track/distance when coming home from the back and finishing over the top to win, his second at start seven. He has contested solid races right throughout his career, and now he has found form, hopefully he can go on with it.
Race 2. (16:04) Tourism WA Trophy (72+) 1800m
6 Mosseratti (Bet Now: $4.80) looks one of the really good bets on the card. He ran over the mile here a fortnight back where Oliver looked to give the gelding every chance in the 1/1 but he just lacked the hard fitness and that was probably what cost him when a narrow second to Push To Pass. Maps super again and third up, he should be at peak fitness, and regular rider Troy Turner takes over.
2 Pushin’ Shapes (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Team Pearce trained gelding who comes through the Push To Pass mentioned above and I thought his effort was more than sound, getting back in a fast run race and he grinded to the line strongly but just didn’t have the zip. Gets in very well after the claim for Tayla Stone and rates highly.
4 First Affair (Bet Now: $9.50) is another that comes through the Push To Pass race from two weeks ago where he got back in the run and didn’t come on in what was, on face value, a flop, but he pulled up with a slow recovery so there was an excuse for him. Form prior was good so he can bounce back for sure against this lot.
Race 3. (16:44) Ascend Sales Trophies Jungle Dawn Classic 1400m
1 Celebrity Dream (Bet Now: $1.80) on top but not a moral like the market is suggesting. I think the ride from Pike won her the race in the Jungle Mist a fortnight back, sitting back and wide, with cover, before angling to the outside with clear air and producing a lethal finishing burst. Won’t be doing that from gate one, but on form, she’s the one.
4 Top of The Class (Bet Now: $3.40) trialled up really well prior to resuming in the Jungle Mist and I thought her effort was very good. Just got back and held up a touch at a vital stage but I loved the way she closed off behind Celebrity Dream. She will get clear running from the gate here and has more upside than Celebrity Dream so I wouldn’t be shocked if she won.
2 Fontainebleu (Bet Now: $6.50) was four weeks between runs when racing in the Jungle Mist and she looked to have every chance I thought, getting the 1/1 under Whyte but she just lacked the turn of foot. Think she’ll be better over the mile+, but she has class/quality and a good lead is that Whyte remains on.
Race 4. (17:24) Tabtouch Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic 1400m
8 Truly Belong (Bet Now: $2.15) gets the nod. Team Williams trained filly who steps up to 1400m after contesting the Placid Ark a fortnight back where she got a mile off them in the run but closed off with real purpose late in the piece when a narrow second to Ocean Jewel. She has that turn of foot, a lethal one, which is up in trip is her advantage over a few of these who are mile types.
1 Gaulois (Bet Now: $2.70) is one of those mile types but he has quality on his side and he’ll definitely be fit after the WA Guineas run. He was three and four wide for the entire trip yet loomed to win before dying on the run 150m out. Draws to get a much more economical run here and Avdulla takes over now.
9 Haya (Bet Now: $71.00) is an interesting runner. Was hard in the market when debuting in a York maiden and though the margin was narrow, and she had to work for it, I thought there was a bit of merit in the performance. The time wasn’t far off Niccatrice, who scored a dynamite win in the Country Final last Saturday, so that looks okay for this.
Race 5. (18:00) Mumm Champagne Handicap (72+) 1200m
Giving another look to 7 Remember Berlin (Bet Now: $4.80). He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and if you were on, like me, it’s best you don’t remember the replay. He was absolutely bolting in the run behind the speed but couldn’t get out in the straight and he wins with clear air. Should get it this time.
6 Get Over It (Bet Now: $3.50) won that race mentioned above and what got him the win was the fact he got clear air at the right time and it was a lovely ride from Dan Staeck. That was his first run in three weeks, so there should be improvement left in him, he draws well again and he does save his best for the 1200m.
3 Key To Fame (Bet Now: $5.00) hasn’t raced for just under four weeks since contesting the York Cup where he attempted to lead all the way under Aaron Mitchell and he tried hard but the hard 1500m saw him out behind See Me Sizzle. Maps to get a lovely run near the speed and he does run very well on the fresh side.
Race 6. (18:35) Tabtouch Handicap (1MW) 1000m
3 Where’s Wally (Bet Now: $4.00) on top in a really good sprint race. This four year old is first up but looks ready to go. He hasn’t raced since the 2016 Placid Ark when finishing a game fourth to Caipirinha. Funnily enough, there has been no subsequent winners from that race and it’s over a year old, so that worries me, but his recent Belmont trial was quite encouraging.
4 Scalpel (Bet Now: $7.00) is a very talented son of Snippetson resuming for the Simon Miller yard. This bloke hasn’t raced since mid June at Belmont when second to Belter after just doing a bit too much work outside the speed. Showed really good dash in winning a recent Lark Hill trial. Just has to overcome the nasty gate to be a threat.
1 Kramden (Bet Now: $18.00) looks the knockout chance. He ran over this track/distance at the midweeks where he was wide no cover on a hot speed yet fought on rather well in defeat when sixth to Arafura, beaten just under three lengths. Draws to get a lovely sit just off the speed and gets the 3kg claim for Tayla Stone.
Race 7. (19:10) Churchill Consulting GA Towton Cup 2200m
8 Trap For Fools (Bet Now: $2.25) does look the obvious. He has been an absolute revelation in recent times for the Lindsey Smith and confirmed his rise with a gritty on speed win last time out in the Tatts Cup under Douglas Whyte who got everything out of the horse late when challenged. Maps to lead again and take some running down.
2 Falcon Crest (Bet Now: $2.80) tried very had to nail Trap For Fools in the Tatts Cup and loomed large with about 150m to go but the winner just dug in when required and held a margin. He does get a weight pull on that horse here, he draws well and does get Oliver steering, so he has a few things going for him.
1 Zarantz (Bet Now: $8.00) could be the big improver here. He ran in the Carbine Club a fortnight back and just found the 1400m too short but I did like the way he stuck and ran to the line and through it with purpose. 1400m-2200m in two weeks is an ask, but something that is done often with success by the stable.
Race 8. (19:50) Magic Millions Kingstown Town Classic 1800m
1 Black Heart Bart (Bet Now: $3.50 BOOSTED ODDS). looks the obvious and really, only bad luck beats him. Was asked to set a near weight carrying record in the Railway and he tried so hard but Great Shot got the bob when it mattered in a thrilling finish. Nothing from the Railway will beat him here, he draws beautifully, will improve…I think he is a near even money pop.
4 Tom Melbourne…(Bet Now: $8.50) ah Tom Tom Tom. He did it again in the Railway. Looked to be bolting, behind the speed, got the split, dashed, looked home fora brief period, but as Tom does, he just didn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for a close up third. He will be suited up to 1800m for sure and if he just relaxes, he’ll look the winner again at some stage.
8 Life Less Ordinary (Bet Now: $18.00 BOOSTED ODDS) could well be the forgotten horse. Not sure he’s a WFA type but what I do like is that there has been intent from the Waller camp to run here and target this race only. He did an amazing job over 1800m on Cup Day given the bias when second to Odeon after getting well off them. Gets a sweet draw, Whyte steers…I think he is the clear overs.
Race 9. (20:30) Iron Jack Handicap (66+) 1500m
9 My Grace (Bet Now: $8.50) on top in the get out. Team Williams trained mare who was 1200m-1000m when racing here four weeks back and she just lacked the dash when fourth to Tenterden. Very interesting that she rises to 1500m here off the month break, but Pike sticks and hard to disagree with the stable.
13 Great Again (Bet Now: $5.00) is a lightly raced five year old for the Lindsey Smith who resumed over 1300m at Northam and his effort was outstanding I thought. He got a mile back off the speed before presenting wider and finishing off with real purpose to run a close up second to Pinball Wizard. Draws a touch awkwardly but he’s very promising.
7 Come On Board (Bet Now: $15.00) is five weeks between runs since racing over this track/distance where he sat on speed most of the way under apprentice Andrew Castle and he gave a pretty decent kick when asked for the effort but found Special Delivery too good. Rises a bit in depth, but races well on the fresh side and gets Oliver steering.
