One of the better racedays on the SA racing calendar is Adelaide Cup Day and the 2021 edition rolls around on Monday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Adelaide Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Adelaide Cup
Race 1. (12:45) Cinderella Stakes 1050m
Very tricky race to kick the meeting off. I’m with 4 Sirianni (Bet Now: $3.60), but not a great deal of confidence. Lloyd Kennewell trained filly that debuted over 1100m at Kilmore and finished her race off with real purpose late in the piece, beaten a lip by King’s Ransom. That should hold her in good stead for what is likely to be a fast 1050m.
1 Seradess (Bet Now: $3.70) commands some level of respect. Was unwanted in betting ($31-$51) when debuting at Bendigo over 1000m but she unleashed a powerful finishing burst late, sharing the win with Cloudy and produced some of the better late splits of the meeting. Hard to beat I’d suggest.
7 Starsongari (Bet Now: $13.00) is an interesting runner. Chris Bieg trained filly that is on debut off the back of just one trial at Morphettville where she looked to move okay in a jumpout where I’m not sure there was overly anything special engaged, but have to be on guard with this stable when throwing one in the deep end.
Race 2. (13:25) White Marquee (bm72) 1600m
8 La Richesse (Bet Now: $4.40) does her best racing when allowed to control from the front and should she be able to do that on this track especially, then she clearly becomes the one to beat. Attempted to lead throughout over the mile on the course proper two weeks ago and ran a brave race, just failing to see it out when beaten narrowly by Unlaced. Leads again for fun I feel and with a 1.5kg weight swing in her corner over Unlaced, leaning her way.
4 Unlaced (Bet Now: $2.05) is a talented mare for Michael Hickmott. Good little test for her here but she’s a winner and loves to dig in, which was clearly evident in that race mentioned above. She was beaten but found under pressure and surged hard late to nab La Richesse. Racing super and even with the rise in weights, she has to be respected.
Think 9 Icecrusher (Bet Now: $16.00) is racing really well at the moment for Shayne Cahill. Impressive win two back at Gawler before going here in the Unlaced race where she was ordinary away, back near last, but liked the way she finished her race off and was far from disgraced. I think $13+ for her is clear overs if that Unlaced form reference is the right one for this, which I think it is.
Race 3. (14:05) Furphy Hcp 1200m
I’m a bit surprised 2 Highly Discreet (Bet Now: $3.70) isn’t shorter in the market. $4+ for her is more than acceptable IMO given this is the easiest race she has contested in some time and all her form is blacktype. Resumed in the Typhoon Tracy at the Valley and was good late behind Macroura after spotting them a decent start. If she’s going to indeed be a Stakes class horse, has to be winning this.
1 Ecumenical (Bet Now: $5.00) is the class runner of the field given she is a multiple Stakes winner from this time last year as a juvenile. Did a good job in the Spring and ran fourth in the Thousand Guineas, so she has the runs on the board. Blinkers off for the resumption and drawing wide are my two queries, so watch the market.
Market will be interesting with 5 Echoes In Eternity (Bet Now: $8.00). Put together a couple of solid wins, but last start, she was a notable drifter late in betting and the market got it right. She didn’t fire a shot and was pretty plain behind Pimm’s Party. Jamie Kah on and if you can forgive a horse for one poor run, she is the value.
Race 4. (14:45) Matrice Stks 1200m
Bar Plates are on for Garner, yet is an even money favourite. He’ll drift for sure, and I’m quite clearly in the corner of 8 Night Raid (Bet Now: $3.00). Resumed just over two weeks ago in the Typhoon Tracy at the Valley and nothing really went right for her in a luckless effort behind Macroura. With clear air, I reckon she goes close to winning and she does look more effective as a sprinter so 1200m is ideal.
3 Second Slip (Bet Now: $3.40) deserves a crack at Stakes company. 3/3 since joining Will Clarken, the latest coming last Saturday at Murray Bridge. He led throughout and was much too good, running fast overall time as well, which is a good sign from the front. Confident he can measure up to this level.
2 Terbium (Bet Now: $10.00) is hit and miss but his best is good enough to be around the mark. Several weeks between runs since racing down the straight at Flemington where he was near the speed and battled on okay behind straight track specialist I’m Telling Ya. Fresh legs here I like and Kayla Crowther rides him better than anyone.
Race 5. (15:20) Canadian Club (bm78) 1050m
Was hard not to be impressed by the first up win of 7 Calypso Reign (Bet Now: $4.80) at Murray Bridge a few weeks ago. Admittedly the race was set up for him due to a strong tempo, but once he was within range 400m out, it was race over and he gapped them. Harder here, but you’d like to think there is only improvement to come.
Back on firmer footing, I’m giving 3 Sizzlefly (Bet Now: $7.50) one last chance. Was really keen on her chances when she raced here a few weeks ago and on the turn, she looked the winner, but as soon as Pannell asked for the effort, the wheels were spinning and she didn’t let down at all. Prior form suggested a win was nearby.
8 Call It A Day (Bet Now: $21.00) is an interesting runner. Will Clarken trains with Damien Thornton to steer. Resumed in a fast run race at Morphettville and closed off strongly nearer the inside, which wasn’t the spot to be, when a narrow second to speed demon Little Rich Boy. Had trialled super prior to that so convinced he’s going well and strikes a winnable race.
Race 6. (16:00) C S Hayes Memorial Cup 1600m
I’ve been a big fan of 9 Ironclad (Bet Now: $4.80) since day one and confident he can measure up against this lot. First run, he didn’t look happy on wet ground but was too good. Then jumped straight to the mile, went toe to toe with Ritratto, which isn’t an easy task, and he got the better of Ritratto. Does no work from the gate and should take beating.
8 Lord Vladivostok (Bet Now: $5.00) deserves a crack at blacktype. Michael Hickmott has him humming along beautifully this prep, winning his past two. Lot of arrogance about his win over 1800m here last time, albeit there was nothing special on the clock. But, he gets good weight relief and can press forward.
1 Le Don De Vie (Bet Now: $9.50) has class and it’ll carry him a long way. Came very close to qualifying for the Melbourne Cup via a Geelong Cup win but had to settle for a narrow second to Steel Prince. Then went to the Queen Elizabeth and ran fifth to True Self. His UK form is more than decent enough for a race like this, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 7. (16:45) Adelaide Cup 3200m
It’s hard seeing 4 Tralee Rose (Bet Now: $1.80) getting beat. Was not sure about her in the Lord Reims with the break between runs, but she won like it was a barrier trial and seemingly had plenty in reserve to the eye under Stubby, who remains on. All things being equal, she will be too good for this lot.
2 Mosh Music (Bet Now: $13.00) is racing well for Archie Alexander but 58kg over two miles is a tough ask. In saying that, she was a strong winner of the Roy Higgins last Saturday and her figure was similar to that of Tralee Rose and what it produced in the Lord Reims. Upside is with Tralee Rose, but Mosh Music should acquit herself.
7 Starcaster (Bet Now: $10.00) has found a new lease on life. He looked busted once upon a time but the gear change of Jamie Kah going on and the horse has improved out of sight. Admittedly he has won a couple of plain races, but he has done it in impressive fashion. Good test here, but think he’s up to it.
Race 8. (17:25) Morphettville Guineas 1600m
Great to see 8 Victoria Quay (Bet Now: $2.25) back at the races. I think had she backed up, she would have won the Oaks in the Spring after scoring a super win in the Wakeful. Was spelled with the SA Oaks in mind. Liked her recent Oakbank trial, Jamie Kah is on for her return, drawn well…think she’s better than these.
2 Struck By (Bet Now: $8.00) is the one that is race fit and racing well for Travis Doudle and does have a good racing pattern to give himself every chance. That was the case last Saturday over 1400m at Murray Bridge and he was dominant in the run to the line. Gets the cart over via Milton Park and will give a sight.
4 Montepulciano (Bet Now: $23.00) is the one from a SA Derby perspective I have eyes on here. Last raced in a 1500m maiden at Gawler where he really attacked the line late and despite doing a bit wrong was able to get the job done. Been given a break with the Derby in mind so keen to see how he goes.
Race 9. (18:05) Winning Edge Presentation-bm68 1200m
12 Midnight Storm (Bet Now: $3.10) lacks the class of some of these, but he’s a tough customer that puts himself near the speed and gives his all, something that can’t be said about a number of these. Lumped the 60kg just over two weeks ago and tried very hard when just edged out late by Lope De Wolf. Think the draw is okay and in a tricky race, happy to be in his corner.
Market will be fascinating with 7 Hypersonic (Bet Now: $4.20), who resumes for the McEvoy camp. Talented four year old that resumes, having not raced since August 21 at Bendigo when at the end of his prep and looking for the paddock on a testing track. Recent jumpout was just fair I thought, but no doubting he has the ability to take out a race like this.
Back on the course proper should suit 5 Bolt I Am (Bet Now: $13.00). Not sure the Parks track was to his liking last time out but he closed off alright late in the piece in restricted room. Probably not the most reliable horse going around but his best is more than good enough to measure up to these.
