Feature racing returns to Flemington on Saturday where it is Aurie’s Star Handicap Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out ten metres for the entire circuit.
Aurie’s Star Handicap π: View the Field and Odds for the Aurie’s Star Handicap
Race 1. (12:05) 2021 Ctry Achiever John Ledger 2530m
5 One More Try (Bet Now:Β $4.60 TOP ODDS) is yet to prove herself at 2500m but is racing like it will suit. Ran over 2000m here three weeks ago and worked home strongly from near last in the run when fourth to Furrion in a good effort. Off that, 2500m here should be fine and has upside to come.
1 Dr Drill (Bet Now:Β $4.40 TOP ODDS) is knocking on the door to win one. Five weeks between runs when racing over 2000m at Flemington three weeks ago. Loomed to win when presented but just lacked the hard race fitness and was pipped late by Furrion. Fitter, finds a very winnable race and likes racing here.
If they are seriously thinking that 3 Schabau (Bet Now:Β $4.20 TOP ODDS) is a Cups horse, surely he has to be putting this lot. Resumed in the Furrion race mentioned above and while he was never really a winning threat, liked the way he finished his race off. Gets an in form Prebble steering and has class when right.
Race 2. (12:40) Vrc Mem. Stuart Pettigrew-bm70 1410m
11 Stalking (Bet Now:Β $6.00 TOP ODDS) is a James Cummings trained filly that should eat up the 1400m. She ran over 1300m at Sandown last time out and worked home strongly from near last in the run behind Sharp Response. If she can settle a pair or two closer in the run, she’ll take beating here.
3 Sunfall (Bet Now:Β $3.90 TOP ODDS) is a Price/Kent trained three year old that has come back in really good order. Resumed with a strong maiden win at Geelong. Then went to Caulfield when back in the run and closing off strongly behind stablemate River Views. Hard fit now and hopefully can sit closer in the run.
1 Sharp Response (Bet Now:Β $4.50 TOP ODDS) has done little wrong in his career to date. Has won two of his three career outings, the last start seeing him knuckle down strongly to win at Sandown. His lone defeat saw him run second to talented juvenile Jigsaw, so the form around him reads well and off last start, 1400m will be okay.
Race 3. (13:15) Jockeys Celebration Day (bm70) 1100m
4 Lombardo (Bet Now:Β $3.20 TOP ODDS) is a Price/Kent trained three year old that has good talent and early speed. Resumed on the Parks track a few weeks ago where he looked a good thing on paper and duly saluted under Crowther to score. He’s got sustained speed from the front and that is an ideal recipe.
3 Zorro’s Dream (Bet Now:Β $7.50 TOP ODDS) has been in work a little while for Mitch Freedman but continues to race well. He got a fair way back in the run at Flemington last time and was very good late behind Yulong Storm in running third. Been around the mark in recent weeks and is one of many here that deserve a Saturday metro win.
15 Teramia (Bet Now:Β $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a Matt Laurie trained mare that is lightly raced but has the engine under the hood to take this out. Around a month between runs since racing at Sandown. She got a fair way back off the speed and spotted those in front a decent start but worked home quite well behind Our Birdsong. Fresh legs back to 1100m, she’s a key chance.
Race 4. (13:55) Vrc Member Julie Purnell-bm84 1410m
7 Lindhout (Bet Now:Β $2.70 TOP ODDS) can bounce back. Most of Australia was in her corner three weeks ago at this track/distance but unfortunately for her backers, she just got a bit too far back in the run but rocketed late to just miss. She’s a talented mare that is potentially blacktype class, so confident she can bounce back into the winners list.
3 Melodeon (Bet Now:Β $11.00 TOP ODDS) is on the seven day back up for Charlotte Littlefield after racing last Saturday at the Valley. Got back to near last in the run and was never really a winning threat, but did close off her race quite well. Gets a significant jockey upgrade and like her up to 1400m.
8 The Closer (Bet Now:Β $67.00 TOP ODDS) should appreciate firmer footing. Has contested a couple of strong 84 races her last two runs, the latest being three weeks ago at Flemington behind Chassis. Not sure she is good enough to win, but can entertain her for wider multiples against this lot.
Race 5. (14:35) Vrc Member Kate Crosby (bm84) 1100m
15 Miss Albania (Bet Now:Β $6.50) deserves another chance. Jumped out like a jet prior to resuming at Caulfield where I thought she had every chance in front and just couldn’t quite get the job done when third to Plaquette, but was leading and no leader won for the meeting. She is a very consistent type that is rarely far away and that should be the case again.
Market will be fascinating with 2 Oxley Road (Bet Now:Β $4.80), resuming for Peter Moody. There was talk from the camp that he could have been a Group l horse, and could still reach that level. Won two of three career outings to start his racing life in the Autumn, including a Stakes win. Just all depends if gate one is an advantage or not.
13 Pinyin (Bet Now:Β $13.00) is three weeks between runs since racing down the straight at Flemington where she was near the back of the packed and worked home okay late when fourth to Kalkarni Royale. She is a hard horse to catch but her best is good enough to beat these.
Race 6. (15:15) Hong Kong Jockey Club Hcp 1410m
3 Groundswell (Bet Now:Β $3.60) is a flat track bully in the sense he loves to control from the front and I think he will get that set up here. Hasn’t raced for nine weeks since a game second in the Spear Chief when leading and bloused late. Lane rides him better than others and he is back on.
7 King Magnus (Bet Now:Β $2.90) is a beauty for the Griffiths/De Kock camp. He is flying at the moment. Just has to translate it to Flemington now given his last two starts have resulted in impressive wins at Caulfield. If he does bring his Caulfield form to headquarters, he’ll take beating.
4 Mosh Music (Bet Now:Β $23.00) is a quality mare for Archie Alexander that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the Adelaide Cup where she didn’t disgrace herself at all in defeat I thought behind Good Idea. Can sprint well fresh and overall, this isn’t an overly strong open handicap, so watch the market.
Race 7. (15:55) Vrc Member J Hoy Trophy (bm78) 2000m
This looks pretty straight forward here with 7 Hosier (Bet Now:Β $1.65). Son of Camelot for Rob Hickmott and Team Williams that is unbeaten since arriving in Australia, his latest start seeing him trot up at Sandown when leading throughout and spanking them. He’s a quality animal destined for better races and this should be another winning stepping stone.
14 Orleans Rock (Bet Now:Β $15.00) is bursting to win a race and I think he gets a golden chance here. Ran over 2000m at Flemington three weeks ago in an open handicap and worked home with real purpose late when third to Furrion. Back to 78 grade, he will take beating here.
18 Feuermond (Bet Now:Β $23.00) is a Lindsey Smith trained gelding that has returned in really good order. Produced an electric finish to win fresh at Geelong. He then went to Sandown and didn’t stop chasing in a good effort behind Hosier. Not sure he turns the tables but runs well regardless.
Race 8. (16:30) Aurie's Star Handicap 1200m
I know he is first up with bigger fish on the horizon, but I think this race is D-Day for 3 Aysar (Bet Now:Β $5.50). He teased to be a star in the Autumn, but when it came to face the music, he didn’t measure up and was a big disappointment. Jamie Kah on and we know at his best, he has brilliance.
5 The Astrologist (Bet Now:Β $5.50) is a proven straight track performer that returns to it after racing two weeks ago in the Bletchingly where he led and gave a really good kick, only just nabbed late in a blanket finish. He is the one that is hard fit, in form and likes racing dwon the straight.
14 Too Good Too Hard (Bet Now:Β $10.00) is a Phillip Stokes trained mare that was supposed to be heading to the breeding barn after a couple of wins in SA, but here she is back racing and in search of blacktype. She races well on the fresh side and is proven down the straight, so she is one for wider multiples.
Race 9. (17:05) Vrc Member M Kiely Trophy-bm84 1600m
3 Scottish Dancer (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is flying and see no reason why he can’t continue his winning ways. Barnstorming finish from the back to win at Caulfield a few weeks ago, letting down with purpose under Jack Hill to score, who remains on for this race as well. Drawn wide, but gets three wide cover and is strong late.
Fitter and up to the mile are two big ticks for 7 Grinzinger Allee (Bet Now:Β $4.80). Resumed a few weeks back at Caulfield over 1400m. Just found the seven furlongs fresh a bit sharp for him but thought he closed off his race really well. Jamie Kah remains on and should land in a good spot from the draw.
4 Floating Artist (Bet Now:Β $46.00) is one I do like. Brought over from the UK with him some solid form. Australian debut came over 1400m at Caulfield and I didn’t think he was too bad behind the very much in form King Magnus. Might need one or two more, but at a big price, I can entertain him as a first four threat.
