Nine races will be run and won at Ascot on Saturday as their Carnival continues. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:19) Crossman Memorial Plate 1100m
2 Sassy Trader (Bet Now: $2.25) is suited back to 1100m for the Casey team. Resumed over 1200m here where he had the suck run in behind the speed and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off, having to settle for third. He’s more a short course horse, so 1100m is better for him and is hard to beat from the good draw.
3 American Choice (Bet Now: $3.75) is 1300m back to 1100m, which I do find interesting. Perhaps a prep run for the Placid Ark in a couple of weeks? Impressive winner last time out over 1300m at Northam, which followed a solid enough resumption at Ascot behind Clairvoyance. Small field helps and is hard to beat.
7 Alpha And Omega (Bet Now: $11.00) has a decent engine under the hood. Highly doubt he wins here, but he has got the ability to run a cheeky race at a price. Both career outings have come over 1200m, the latest when on speed and he tried hard, but was nutted near the peg. Think if they roll forward, that is their best chance of getting a better share of the prizemoney.
Race 2. (15:59) Tabtouch-better Your Bet Plate 1100m
I’m in the corner of 11 Liwa (Bet Now: $2.90) for the Simon Miller team. This girl has had two trials to get ready for start one, the latest coming last week at Belmont over 850m when on speed throughout and looked to travel well throughout, going on to win the trial. Soft gate with Chris Parnham aboard, she will do me here in what looks a competitive race.
It’s hard to get a proper guide on 400m trials, but going off the replays, I do like the look of 12 Sockoff (Bet Now: $8.50). Dion Luciani trained juvenile that has looked the party each time she has stepped out and gone about her business nicely. Has the good gate to use and in an astute team, so watch the market I feel.
7 Crowned Princess (Bet Now: $67.00) should appreciate the extra 100m. Both career outings have come over 1000m here. She has showed okay ability at each outing but has looked a horse that will appreciate more ground, which is what she gets here so I think she is the one that will be one of the best suited with the extra 100m. Knockout chance at odds.
Race 3. (16:39) Schweppes (bm66+) 2200m
8 Treasured Crown (Bet Now: $3.60) is stepping up in trip and I think will be more than okay at it. Gave them a spanking to win over 1800m last time out. Sat just off the speed before CJT peeled him into clear air and away he went. Hasn’t ticked off the staying box but every indication is that he will be okay at it. Hard to beat.
3 Come Right Back (Bet Now: $4.00) looks a progressive animal for Adam Durrant and could be a sneaky Perth Cup chance if he keeps heading in the right direction. Bolted up at this track/distance last time out and the race rated okay for the day. Has gate one to use and I think will want to make this a proper staying contest given he’s taking on horses with a touch more brilliance.
12 Vintage Stock (Bet Now: $15.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he had a suck run in behind the speed and tried hard, just getting the better of her rivals at the end. Harder here with more depth, but she’s a mare in form and is down in the weights. Not sure she wins, but a must for multiples.
Race 4. (17:25) Crown Sports Bar (bm72+) 1600m
Think the Bob Peters pair will dominate the race. In terms of picking one on top, I’ll give the nod to 11 Western Pride (Bet Now: $4.40). This mare had three legs according to the market two weeks ago and she ran accordingly. Had three wide cover but found nothing under pressure. Getting fitter now and senior jock takes over, so expecting a bounce back.
9 Naughty By Nature (Bet Now: $3.40) should love the rise to 1600m for the Jason Miller camp. Ran over 1400m in the race mentioned above that Western Pride contested. This guy got back and found the line pretty well without really threatening. The extra 200m I do like for him and overall, the depth here isn’t strong.
6 Paddy’s Shadow (Bet Now: $8.00) is likely using this as a prep run for something further, but he’s a good, tough stayer that will keep chipping away. That’s what he did four weeks ago when a narrow second to Double Digit. Not sure I could back him to win, but he’ll put himself near the speed and try hard, as he always does.
Race 5. (18:04) Kirin Megumi (rs1mw) 1800m
Think the rise to 1800m will be a big help to 4 Midnight Blue (Bet Now: $4.20). He ran over the mile here last Saturday where he was dragged back to near last from the wide gate, but loved the way he worked home late when fourth to Notorious One. He can sit closer in the run from the gate and has a 2kg weight swing on Notorious One.
6 Notorious One (Bet Now: $2.35) is on the seven day back up for the Gangemi team after an impressive win here over the mile last Saturday when ridden very positively from the outset by McGruddy and he bounced back to his best. 1800m is a different pain barrier but he does look quite progressive and can measure up with a soft trip to see the distance out.
12 Deputano (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Lindsey Smith trained mare who lacks the class of some of these but the 1800m should be fine for her. Sat near the speed over the mile here last time out and had a battle to get the win but she did show good ticker to fend them off. Harder here, but does no work from the gate and have to respect the Smith/Parnham combo.
Race 6. (18:40) Glenroy Chaff (rs1mw) 1400m
3 Point Taken (Bet Now: $20.00) is a beauty for Jim Taylor and I think off a good speed, this in form mare can take this out. Three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when off the speed and working home strongly to run second to Special Choice. Gets the 3kg claim, sits off a genuine tempo and should be strong at the end. Hard to beat.
2 Mr Genoa (Bet Now: $16.00) is on the seven day back up for Peter Fernie after racing last Saturday on his home track at Kalgoorlie. Led at a good clip and did try hard. Just couldn’t quite hold on and had to settle for second. Harder here, but looks to get a good time of it near the front and his best is clearly good enough.
7 Carabinier (Bet Now: $91.00) is a knockout chance here. Paul Jordan trained gelding that ran at the midweeks here last time out where he got back in the run and looked to have something to offer. Just didn’t get the clear run he wanted at the right time. Not sure he wins, but one for multiples, especially from the gate.
Race 7. (19:15) Fairetha Stakes 1400m
9 First Law (Bet Now: $8.50) on top for me in a very tricky edition of the Fairetha. Simon Miller trained gelding that resumed over 1200m here three weeks ago and worked home strongly from the back when second to Kissonallforcheeks. Up to 1400m looks a big tick for him and I do hope CJT is positive from the wide gate.
3 Em Tee Aye (Bet Now: $8.00) will need luck from the wide gate, but Trevor Andrews does have a smart three year old on his hands here. 12/10 steer from McGruddy saw him bolt up at this track/distance last time out and did it with something in hand. Was able to slot in from the wide barrier that day. Can history repeat itself?
12 Billy Ray (Bet Now: $17.00) must be showing something at home, or else why does he keep getting backed? He’s been $1.28, $1.35 and $1.90 in all three career outings and has been safely held each time in much weaker races than this, so why is he being so hard in the market each time? Must be showing something at home and does draw soft.
Race 8. (19:55) Lee Steere Stakes 1400m
Second up from a spell, in the corner of 5 Platoon (Bet Now: $11.00). Resumed three weeks ago in the Northerly and loved the way he attacked the line from off the speed when a close up second to surprise winner Taxagano. He has the strong second up record, and sitting off a good speed, he’ll take some holding out late.
1 Kementari… (Bet Now: $5.50) surely… surely he couldn’t win this? Even though, the depth is nowhere near as strong as what he has faced throughout his career. His two runs back from a break haven’t been too bad, the latest in the Manikato behind Hey Doc. Any hint of his best and it’s a gap job…but it is Kementari…it is is ‘Special K’.
9 Uni Time (Bet Now: $35.00) has a good third up record and I think he can be a big improver here at odds. Comes through the Asian Beau from last Saturday where he got into a lovely spot just off the speed and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off behind Inspirational Girl. That’s the leading form for the Railway and he draws soft. Knockout chance at a price.
Race 9. (20:30) Amelia Park (bm72+) 1100m
Think back to run a fast run 1100m, I do like 7 Long Beach (Bet Now: $4.60) in the get out. He ran over 1200m here two weeks ago where he was back in the run and held up at times, so I think he should have finished closer without winning. Hopefully can sit closer in the run, with the Winkers to sharpen him up. Happy to be in his corner.
4 Battle Storm (Bet Now: $5.00) is a big watch here. Had a stint in Victoria before coming back to Team Williams. Resumed over 1000m here where he got back, wide with cover, and worked home very strongly late in the piece in an eye catching return. Think if he’s within range on the turn, he will take a power of beating.
10 Highland Beat (Bet Now: $35.00) has somewhat mixed his form since coming to WA but he does come here with fresh legs. Three weeks between runs since an okay effort behind Elite Street, but from the gate, he will do no work in the run and if the breaks go his way, he is capable of filling a first four spot at good odds.
