7/10/2023 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Kalgoorlie, Kalgoorlie Cup day

5 Barney’s World (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should be winning this. Luke Fernie trained three year old who has been strong in three career outings, all coming at Belmont. Latest was just over two weeks ago over 1200m when near the speed and looked the winner but after being keen in the run, he couldn’t quite finish it off and was nabbed late. If he brings better racing manners, he has plenty on this lot.

7 Mining Legend (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of War Chant for Stephen Miller that resumes. This guy is first up, having not raced since June 10 at Belmont when just fair on a testing track behind Paris Calling, trying to lead but tired late. Two runs prior were strong to my eye and his recent Lark Hill trial was a decent piece of work. Key and I reckon only threat.

3 Rum N Ginger (Bet Now:  $SP.00), I think, has talent to win a maiden. Doubt it comes here but he could pinch a first four spot. He has had genuine excuses both runs. On debut, he bombed the start and spent too many petrol tickets midrace. Last start, he was wide no cover and tired late. Think with an economical run in transit, he can run a much improved race.

1 Civvy Street (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to have returned in good order and strikes a very winnable race. Team Casey trained gelding that resumed last Wednesday at Belmont where you can make a case he should have won had he not hit the running rail around 1000m out. He regathered himself and found the line well to run second. Better luck in run here, he’ll be hard to hold out.

3 So Likable (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has a fab record at the track and off the return, he’s hard to beat. He resumed over 1200m at Belmont where the market wanted him with confidence when sitting wide with cover. He got clear air and worked home strongly late in the piece behind Diamond Blue. If there is natural improvement, especially on a track he loves…all points to him running well.

7 Princess Chunk (Bet Now:  $SP.00) can win without surprising. Ran over this track/distance last time out where she had a suck run in behind and looked to be full of running but unfortunately she didn’t get clear at any stage and it was pretty much a barrier trial for her. Convinced she is racing well and with the rub of the green, she can win.

7 Thinking Game (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is bred to eat up 2200m and has more upside than most. Lightly raced mare that broke her maiden tag at Belmont last start over the mile, leading throughout and credit to her, she was there to be beaten, but she found plenty under pressure to fend them off and win. Bred to love the rise to 2200m and the depth is on the thin side.

8 Bentley’s Brother (Bet Now:  $SP.00) hasn’t won in a long time but he loves racing at Kalgoorlie and is in form. He ran over 1760m a couple of weeks ago where he got back to near last in the run and made up a stack of ground late in the piece behind Count Grundy, finishing a close up fourth. Rise in trip is ideal and with a drag into the race, he’ll be dangerous.

6 Kolchino (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and give them something to chase. That is what he did at Northam on Sunday at this trip and he gave a strong kick but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Etomorp. His racing style will see him give himself every chance and at odds, he could pinch it.

2 Rocky Path (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a talented mare and I do think back in trip suits. They tested her at a staying trip last time in the Boulder Cup, potentially seeing if she could get to a Kalgoorlie Cup, and she did run okay, but just didn’t see out the trip behind Villeins. Great record at the track, like her back in trip and if there is petrol in the tank, she’ll take beating against these.

1 Strike Now (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has found winning form and he can go on with it for Jason Miller. This gelding is around three weeks between runs since giving them a start and a beating at Northam over the mile in an impressive display. That was his first run in four weeks so with good room for improvement, he rates highly against these.

8 Dawn Enigma (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Brian Curtis trained gelding that resumes. This guy is first up, having not raced since July 23 when luckless and pretty much went around like a barrier trial behind Rocky Path. Saves his best for this track, he likes 1600m and first up at the mile tells me there is intent, so watch the market.

9 Mingora (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is flying for Peter Fernie and rates as one of the hardest to beat. This mare ran over this track/distance just under two weeks ago where she got back to near last in the run but she rocketed to the line late when a narrow second to Count Grundy. Seemingly loving life in Kalgoorlie and with a drag into the race here, she’ll be quite effective.

2 Count Grundy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has returned in super order and should prove to be a leading contender here. Did more than enough fresh behind Celebrity Witness before going to 1760m when giving them a start and a beating from the back in an impressive display. He has room for improvement and strikes a winnable race.

7 Kenny The King (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. His two runs back from a spell have come here, the latest at this trip when attempting to lead throughout and giving a mini kick but tired late behind Count Grundy. Hard fit now, lands on speed and will give cheek. Could pinch a first four spot.

1 Street Parade (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to lump the weight but there is a reason for that. He is the class of the field, and by some distance. Ran over 1200m two weeks ago at Belmont where he was keen behind the speed and tried hard but just couldn’t produce the goods after using his energy early behind Sentimental Hero. Back to 1100m I like and with his best, he has panels on these.

2 Can’t Be Done (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of All Too Hard for Peter Fernie that resumes. This guy is first up, having not raced since July 22 when back off the speed and kept finding the line without threatening in a definite pass mark behind Puli. Resumes without a trial but trained on the track, Cup Day, you’d be stunned if he wasn’t wound up. Hopefully the market agrees.

Back to 1100m I find interesting with 7 False Statement (Bet Now:  $SP.00). He is four weeks between runs since racing over 1300m at Belmont where he got back in the run and did make up some headway without threatening behind the very much in form Red Fifty Three. Not sure he is a horse who I could back to take this out but he could pinch a first four spot.

6 Men’s Club (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the likely winner if he bounces back. Forget his last start at this track/distance given he was wide no cover throughout and tired late to finish down the track, pulling up slow to recover in a total forgive. The Coolgardie win was dominant and a repeat of that effort here, he is the likely winner.

3 Billy Ray (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Peter Fernie trained gelding that resumes. This guy was formerly with Donna Riordan and had the Bob Peters colours but is now with a local trainer and first up on Cup Day, you’d think there is clear intent. He can be an enigma at times but he is high quality when right and can sprint well fresh. Watch the market.

10 I Am Spartacus (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is in with a shout. He was completely unwanted in betting when resuming in the Coolgardie Sprint but despite the big SP, he finished off hard late, just missing out on the win when second to Men’s Club. If there is any hint of natural improvement off that, he has to rate as one of the leading contenders.

It’s hard to get away from 3 Villeins (Bet Now:  $SP.00). Team Williams trained gelding that was backed as if a moral in the Boulder Cup and under a confident steer from Pike, he made an absolute mess of them and was quite dominant in the run to the line. Been up a little while but he seems to be getting better as the prep goes on. Hard to see him getting beat.

5 Be Optimistic (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the one with upside and Luke Fernie would love to win this race. She was 1760m to 2100m when contesting the Boulder Cup. That race was a proper staying contest and she kept finding the line in a good effort behind Villeins. She has that 2100m run under the belt, which should hold her in good stead for this.

2 General Grant (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is dangerous at odds if they ride positively. They rode him very negatively in the Boulder Cup last time and he was never a factor when down the track behind Villeins. He looked to be right on track but his last few runs have been plain. I am hoping, for his fans, he is ridden on speed. That is his best chance of causing an upset.

4 Californication (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is back on the home track and after two runs in town, he looks extremely hard to beat here. The two runs at Belmont have come at the mile, the latest being two weeks ago when just missing out on the win when a narrow second to Stylax, who led and kicked on strongly. Saves his best for the home track and with normal luck in the run, he’ll take a power of beating.

5 Kick A Goal Son (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win for Peter Fernie. He has been runner up his past two, both coming here over 1200m and 1300m respectively, getting back on the fence before slicing his way through the field and drove hard late to just miss. Tricky gate, but if the breaks go his way, he can take this out.

6 Justamiddy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) doesn’t win out of turn but could pinch a first four spot at a price. He resumed over 1200m at the midweeks at Belmont when just off the speed throughout and seemingly had his chance but was far from disgraced in defeat behind Eevalina. Maps to do no work in the run and his two wins have come at 1400m. Leading contender.

NEXT BEST: Race Six Number 1 Street Parade

LONG SHOT: Race Four Number 2 Rocky Path
