The Wagga Cup Carnival concludes this Friday with a bumper afternoon of racing assembled, highlighted by the $150,000 Listed Wagga Wagga Gokd Cup (2000m). The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:30) : Wagga RSL Club Maiden Plate 1200m:
Back Me: 13 Tupelo Express (Best Odds: $8.00) resumed at Goulburn a couple of weeks back and wasn’t beaten all that when a length fourth. Avdulla rides and should get every chance from the gate.
Big Danger: 6 Swift Reply is a talented galloper that resumes for Paul Murray. He hasn’t raced in nearly 12 months, but looked very sharp in a recent barrier trial at Kembla Grange and Tye Angland rode superbly yesterday.
Roughie: 3 Earless (Best Odds: $13.00) debuted over 1000m here last Tuesday where he got back and closed off well to run fourth. Hand is forced here somewhat by the barrier, but with luck, he can threaten.
Race Two (13:05) : Walsh & Blair Lawyers Handicap (Class 1) 1200m:
Back Me: 1 As Bad As Tyson (Best Odds: $19.00) was an impressive maiden winner two back before taking on a pretty strong field at Wangaratta when fourth to Landau. Strong field here also, but there is a bit to like about him.
Big Danger: 2 Down A Long Road resumed at Wangaratta a couple of weeks back and was backed at odds, and duly saluted, albeit narrowly. He can take the next step for sure in a tricky race.
Roughie: 5 Ideal Express (Best Odds: $6.00) is probably the best horse in the race, but he hasn’t put it together on Raceday. In saying that, he has contested some good races in his time, mostly in town. He is a threat if he brings that form here.
Race Three (13:45) : GWS Giants Handicap (Class 3) 1000m:
Back Me: 6 Therese (Best Odds: $9.00) is the weighted horse to win here. She was fantastic two back at the Sapphire Coast before showing real fight in winning on her home track at Canberra. Tumbles in weight and is in winning form.
Big Danger: 3 Nights On Fire (Best Odds: $3.50) is a talented galloper that was considered good enough to tackle the Goulburn heat of the Country Championships where he ran fifth to Lofy’s Menu. He was then freshened up and ran a beauty in a Highway at Randwick. Only has to bring that form here to go close.
Roughie: 4 Grey Strike (Best Odds: $8.00) is a nippy customer who was too sharp for them last start at Albury over 1000m. Should ping to be on speed again and he doesn’t mind absorbing pressure, so he can definitely win.
Race Four (14:20) : Wagga Wagga Marketplace Handicap (60) 1300m:
Back Me: 2 Le Cavalier (Best Odds: $3.30) has been given a 25 day freshen up since racing over 1400m at Goulburn where he looked a little unlucky behind Martha Mary. Shinn takes the ride and his patient are just what this horse needs.
Big Danger: 9 Onemoregypsy (Best Odds: $6.50) was a short priced elect last time out at Goulburn and on face value, she was disappointing but perhaps the 60kg impost was too much for her. Gets some weight relief here and Angland sticks.
Roughie: 5 Our Project (Best Odds: $4.80) resumed over 1175m at Albury and closed off alright late behind the well performed Mitchell Road. Extra trip and added fitness are the two big ticks, he draws well and gets the services of Jeff Penza.
Race Five (14:55) : The Rules Club 2016 Queen Of The South (68) 1400m:
Back Me: 8 Erika (Best Odds: $3.60) resumed on her home track at Goulburn and produced a brilliant turn of foot from the back to win impressively. With natural upside, and the extra 100m, she should take a power of beating.
Big Danger: 2 Melberra Star (Best Odds: $4.20) ran over this trip at Canberra last time out and closed off strongly late when a close up second to Sigmund. More reliable on wet ground, but blinkers on and the claim helps.
Roughie: 10 Martha Mary (Best Odds: $3.80) has been given a 26 day freshen up since toughing it out strongly to win over 1400m at Goulburn. Should be primed to run well here and looks well placed.
Race Six (15:35) : Audi Centre Wagga MTC Guineas (68) 1600m:
Back Me: 4 Invincible Knight (Best Odds: $2.20) produced a lethal turn of foot from the back to win in impressive fashion at Kembla Grange. Very short in the market but does look to have some upside.
Big Danger: 1 Challenge Accepted (Best Odds: $4.60) is one of the better three year olds this way, which is why he has got the weight. He was really tough in winning the Prelude and though drawn wide, he is a definite chance.
Roughie: 3 Texas Rebel (Best Odds: $15.00) wasn’t really fancied at Randwick on Anzac Day but he showed good fight in the straight when challenged. Must say though that was a weak maiden, but he won in town and has to be respected.
Race Seven (16:10) : Quest Apartments Wagga Wagga Gold Cup 2000m:
Back Me: 13 Secateur (Best Odds: $25.00) looks a great value chance in the race. His Australian debut at Kembla has turned out to be a hot form race, and I thought his effort at Rosehill behind Murphy’s Delight was full of merit. He has performed well up to 3000m in the UK, so he is tough and will stay all day, plus if he jumps well, he can sit close off a genuine tempo.
Big Danger: 7 Adirondack (Best Odds: $3.80) is a tough customer for Shawn Mathrick who absolutely bolted up in winning the rich VOBIS race over this trip at Caulfield. He will be up on speed again, perhaps leading, and he will give a stack of cheek because he can absorb pressure and lift.
Roughie: 8 Dance Of Heroes (Best Odds: $16.00) resumed over 1500m at Rosshill and he stuck on well late behind in form galloper High Midnight. He will get a sweet trip on the rail and can show a turn of foot off a hot speed.
Race Eight (16:50) : Quest Apartmens Wagga Handicap (70) 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Thelittleracketeer (Best Odds: $4.80) has been great since joining the Matty Dale, winning two from two this time in. The latest win at Canberra was very good considering she was strongly challenged in the straight but found plenty in the run home. Just needs to overcome the gate to be a player.
Roughie: 14 Auckland Beauty (Best Odds: $4.80) creates plenty of interest here. Formerly with Peter Moody but is now with Matty Dale. Won fresh last time in, draws a soft gate and Blake Shinn rides…this has got a sniff of a plunge.
Roughie: 4 Calke Abbey (Best Odds: $4.80) is a handy local who comes here off the back of a handy fourth to Count Dekroner in the Town Plate Prelude, with that horse having no luck yesterday in the Town Plate. Well weighted after the claim and will get the dream sit off the hot tempo.
BEST BET: Race Six Number 4 Invincible Knight
NEXT BEST: Race Three Number 6 Therese
VALUE: Race Seven Number 13 Secateur
