Racing returns to Caulfield this Saturday where nine races have been set down, highlighted by the Anniversary Vase (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:25) Thomas North Handicap 1100m
Found this race nearly impossible to sort out with confidence. In saying that, 7 Meuse (Bet Now: $3.50 TOP ODDS) did look impressive on debut and should prove hard to run down from the front. Debuted over 1100m at Bendigo where she led all the way and was quite impressive, especially last 50m because she was strong late and was edging clear late. Lands near the pace here and is the safe option.
6 Peak (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a Team Hawkes trained son of Per Incanto having his first start. He has had three Flemington jumpouts in readiness for his debut and while he hasn’t looked top shelf, he’s been okay. Going off the vision, he looks a big rangy type with plenty of scope physically. In the right stable and overall, I don’t think this is the strongest two year old racing going around.
I think Mick Kent has a handy juvenile in 3 Capito (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS), who is first up here. Hasn’t raced since the Inglis Banner on Cox Plate Day where he avoided all the carnage and ran a credible fourth before being spelled. He’s had two jumpouts at Cranbourne and didn’t really set the world on fire, but the trial on Monday looked much better. Draw is the only real negative.
Race 2. (13:00) Selangor Turf Club Handicap (78) 1600m
He’s been a bit costly since coming to Australia but the talent has been seen in glimpses from 2 Danon Roman (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS). Just hasn’t put it all together as of yet, but his first up run at Sandown was okay behind Kazio when back and closing off okay with the 60kg. Should take good improvement from that outing and second up last prep saw him finish four lengths off Furrion. Reads well for this.
9 Intueri (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is in a real purple patch at the moment for the Hawkes camp and is a definite leading contender here. Last two runs have come at the Valley mile, bolting up two back before copping pressure on speed last time but fighting on quite strongly to run a close up second to Paremuus Boy. Should land on pace again. Just hope he doesn’t have to spend too many petrol tickets.
10 I Got You (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is a Joseph Waldron trained galloper who was a few weeks between runs when racing at Geelong last time where he was wide no cover on speed and had every right to drop away but he kept finding and wasn’t beaten far in a pretty good effort. Draws much better this time around, Jamie Kah on and is certainly not to be dismissed in an even race.
Race 3. (13:35) Polytrack Handicap (84) 1600m
With a light weight and lack of early speed, I think each way you can’t go wrong with 9 Pria Eclipse (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS). Ran at Mornington a couple of weeks back where she had the light weight, got a good run off the speed and loomed large to win, but was beaten on the peg by Master Shuhood, who was impressive at his Australian debut. Likely lands in front and with only 51kg, he’ll be hard to run down.
5 La Tigeresa (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) looks to be going really well at the moment for the Jason Warren stable. Very good off a moderate gallop two back at Flemington behind Oregon’s Day before going to the Sunline at the Valley where she was forced very wide on the turn and couldn’t dash behind Consensus. Much better suited on the bigger track and can improve big time.
8 Birth Of Venus (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a Chris Waller trained mare who is likely wanting 2000m+ but could run a decent race at odds. Made her Australian debut over the mile at Moonee Valley where she was quite good in defeat after sitting wide no cover throughout and pulling. Hopefully she gets a more genuine tempo this time around and can get cover, so she can show her best.
Race 4. (14:15) The Importer Handicap 1600m
It’s hard seeing anything other than another win for the Phillip Stokes trained 1 Mr Quickie (Bet Now: $1.95 TOP ODDS), who is heading towards the SA Derby. Brilliant first up winner at Flemington before contesting the Mornington Guineas where he looked a good thing on paper and was ridden accordingly, scoring a dominant victory. His last 600m was over four lengths quicker than anything else in the race and outside the two sprint races, it was the fastest final 600m of the meeting. Bodes really well.
4 Star Missile (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) is a handy son of Smart Missile for the Greg Eurell stable who scored a dominant first up win at Cranbourne before going to the Mornington Guineas where he had no luck at all when having plenty to offer behind Mr Quickie. Despite having no momentum, his last 200m was the fourth quickest of the race, so giving him another chance here.
2 Winning Partner (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) is three weeks between runs for the Tony McEvoy stable after contesting the Phar Lap at Rosehill where he looked to be a winning threat at the top of the straight but once he was an asked for an effort, the wheels started spinning and couldn’t let down at all. Should get a much firmer surface this time around and can definitely win this, hopefully getting the sit behind Mr Quickie.
Race 5. (14:55) Walk For Phil Handicap 1100m
Don’t underestimate the Tassie gallopers and the Scott Brunton team has another one, this one being the talented filly 5 Lady Pluck (Bet Now: $3.30), who is 2/2 to start the prep back home. Did work first up at Hobart but class got her home before she went to Launceston and she was far more impressive, with class and arrogance coming to the fore. Confident she can measure up.
4 Aperitif (Bet Now: $9.00) is racing quite well at the moment for the Chris Waller stable but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran down the Flemington straight last time where she got off the pace and surged hard late to just miss when a close up fourth to Causeway Girl. Gets run of the race from the inside gate and I don’t think the depth is as strong this time around.
1 Enbihaar (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented daughter of Magnus for the Hayes/Dabernig stable resuming. She’s a Stakes class filly when at her best, but at times she hasn’t really shown that. Teased a little bit in the Spring but overall was disappointing. Been given a good break and has had three jumpouts in readiness for her return, with the latest one being very good to the eye.
Race 6. (15:35) Hyderabad RC Handicap 1100m
Looks an ideal race for the Phillip Stokes trained 5 Flying Krupt (Bet Now: $3.30). She was somewhat unwanted in betting when resuming down the Flemington straight a few weeks ago and I thought her effort was full of merit, closing off quite well to run second to Swift Sis. Two time second up winner and is a winner here. Looks a really good race for her so happy to be in her corner.
8 Leather’N’Lace (Bet Now: $2.70) is a former Darren Weir mare now under the care of the Ellerton/Zahra stable. Hasn’t raced since Geelong Cup Day when running a close up fourth in the feature mares race behind Moonlover. Can sprint really well first up and for mine has looked pretty good at the Flemington jumpouts. Keen to see what she does first up despite drawing tricky.
1 Fuhryk (Bet Now: $17.00) is the best mare in this race, by an absolute mile…but this is surely D-Day re her racing future. Good resumption in the Bellmaine before being outclassed in the Oakleigh Plate. Then ran down the Flemington straight and put in a shocker behind Swift Sis. This is one of the easier races she has contested in some time and gets the weight relief after the claim.
Race 7. (16:15) Ladbrokes Handicap 1200m
Keen on 13 Spirit Of Aquada (Bet Now: $7.00). It was a horrendously tough watch if you were on him two weeks ago down the Flemington straight. When Melham presented him clear air, it looked all over, but Villa Sarchi just kept finding and in a tight go, the photo went its way. Think 1200m will be fine for him, and with a cold ride, he’ll be dashing late off a likely genuine speed.
I think the early scratchings certainly help 1 Streets Of Avalon (Bet Now: $4.20), the last start Hareeba Stakes winner where he was on speed on the quick back up and was just too tough for his rivals in a dominant display. Zac Spain does get on really well with him, but now Michael Poy takes over with his 3kg claim. He’s a good judge of horses on speed so don’t be put off by that.
A fast run 1100m will really suit the Gerald Ryan trained 10 Albumin (Bet Now: $8.00). He ran in the Bert Lillye on Kembla Grange Classic Day and worked home with real purpose late to just miss out on picking up Intuition. Looking for a dry track, which he gets here, and if he can sit off the good speed, he’ll be strong at the end I’m sure and is a knockout chance for sure.
Race 8. (16:55) Anniversary Vase 1400m
6 Kemono (Bet Now: $16.00) has been a frustrating conveyance since coming to Australia but I think he deserves another chance. Forget he went around last time out in the Abell where he was back in an on pace dominated affair and was never really likely but his late splits were decent enough on a track I’m not sure suited. Think Caulfield will suit him much better, so giving him one more chance.
Giving respect to the handy mare to 13 Naantali (Bet Now: $8.50). This Maher/Eustace is a hard fit/in form mare who comes back to 1400m after running in the Sunline a couple of Friday nights back at the Valley where she seemingly had every chance but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Consensus. I think coming back in trip will suit and I’d love to see her ridden aggressively from the gate, hopefully landing on speed.
Likely being targeted towards the Bool, but for exotics, I’d be including former Queenslander 11 Jumbo Prince (Bet Now: $151.00). Had his first run for Jarrod McLean in the Matrice on Adelaide Cup Day at Morphettville and the sticky track wasn’t to his liking behind Snitzkraft. Extra trip should suit him, as should a firmer track, and his jumpout leading into the resumption was too good to ignore as of yet.
Race 9. (17:30) Le Pine Funerals Handicap 2000m
7 Our Libretto (Bet Now: $6.50) is a, potentially, sharp improver second up. Resumed in the Sunline at the Valley where she got back in the run and was never really a winning threat but was far from disgraced behind Consensus. Is a second up winner, bigger track suits, up to 2000m and has a stack of upside…plenty going for her, but does she need one more run perhaps?
2 Odeon (Bet Now: $4.20) is on the seven day back up for the Ellerton/Zahra stable after contesting the Golden Mile last Saturday where I thought Mott gave the gelding every chance in the run. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when fifth to Haripour. Up to 2000m looks ideal and should get run of the race stuff from the draw and is a leading chance. Just prefer to watch than back.
3 Emperor’s Way (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Team Snowden trained galloper who is bursting to win a race but just keeps finding one or two better on the day. He comes through the Randwick Stakes where he was given every chance I thought in the run from Schofield and loomed large to win but couldn’t quite get there when third to Hiyaam. Has run well at Caulfield before and saves his best for 2000m. He’s knocking on the door. Can he open it?
