WA racing this Saturday will take place at Ascot for an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:21) Heineken 3 Handicap (72+) 1600m
Confident that 2 Broker (Bet Now: $3.40) can bounce back into the winners list. Ran at this track/distance a fortnight back where he sat last in the small field before Pike presented him to the outside on the turn and it looked game over but he was worried out of it late by Prize Catch. Johnston-Porter is back on and rode the horse superbly prior.
1 Missile Launch (Bet Now: $1.75) is a Smart Missile gelding for Vaughn Sigley who was confidently backed when resuming over 1400m here three weeks ago and just missed out on the win when a narrow second to Taxagano. Has a really good second up record and the small field suit suit given he won’t be far off them.
5 Battle Torque (Bet Now: $11.00) is the interesting runner. Adam Durrant trains this bloke, who is first up at the mile but that is not unusual when it comes to the stable. Form tapered away towards the end of last prep but as a whole, the campaign was very good. Has been given a couple of solid Lark Hill trials to prepare and Pike rides.
Race 2. (15:01) Glenroy Chaff Plate 1100m
3 Black Sabbath (Bet Now: $1.95) is a Blackfriars gelding on debut for the Harvey team. Not easy for a debutante to win at Saturday level but this bloke looks well above average based on his two slick trial wins where he has run time both occasions without being fully extended. Very keen to see what he does here.
5 Market Ruler (Bet Now: $2.60) is a Simon Miller trained filly who has been given a little freshen up. Debuted with a sharp win at Bunbury before being thrown in the deep end in the Karrakatta where she was outclassed behind stablemate Valour Road. Pike on, good draw, she can bounce back hard for sure.
1 Super Stardom (Bet Now: $4.20) is a War Chant filly for Neville Parnham who is putting together a good little record, winning two of three starts, her last two starts resulting in said wins. Confidently backed over 1000m here a fortnight back and punters got spot on as she drew clear and won well. Has to tick the 1100m box but I think she can.
Race 3. (15:41) Crown Towers Handicap (66+) 1500m
3 Golgotha (Bet Now: $3.80) on top. Lindsey Smith trains this promising gelding, who resumes. Had a two run prep in the early part of Autumn, winning fresh at 1500m at Pinjarra before a close up fourth to Nelson’s Flight at this track/distance. Trial leading up to the fresh run last time in was fair but he looked much more forward this time around. Keen to see what he does.
2 Delicate Miss (Bet Now: $6.50) is a David Harrison trained mare who doesn’t have the greatest of overall records but she is knocking on the door to go close. Ran over 1400m here a fortnight back and was most unlucky behind Grey Enigma, getting badly held up when appearing to have plenty to offer in the straight when running fourth. Better luck, she can go close.
1 Harry Thomas (Bet Now: $3.50) is three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m here where he was wide with cover throughout and that hard run probably just took its toll late when fifth to Taxagano. He’s a very good horse on the fresh side which is noteworthy and the claim for Fiona Bell is a big tick.
Race 4. (16:21) Marina East Waterfront Apartments By Blackburne Handicap (1MW) 1600m
3 Forty Four Red (Bet Now: $4.60) for me. He ran over 1400m here on Anzac Day when lumping 60kg. Attempted to lead all the way and gave a solid enough kick but had to settle for second to Midnight Sky. Gets good weight relief here and at the mile, I think he’d be better suited with cover and a bunny to chase. That’s his best chance IMHO.
7 Rose’s Shadow (Bet Now: $2.90) is a progressive three year old gelding for Sharon Miller who is putting together a good little record. Ran over this track/distance on Anzac Day where I don’t think he beat much but it was the manner in which he did it that really impressed me. He put them away quickly, which isn’t easy for a three year old taking on the older horses. Confident he can run well.
8 Vacqueyras (Bet Now: $91.00) is a ten year old for Tim Crosby but he hasn’t been far away of late. Ran over the 1190m at Narrogin a couple of Sundays back where he got a mile off them in the run but I didn’t mind the way he finished off his race late when beaten 3.5L. Doubt he wins, but I think for wider exotics, he should be included.
Race 5. (17:00) abtouch Handicap 1200m
Pretty confident that 3 Masquerade (Bet Now: $3.30) wins. Team Williams trains this above average three year old, who hasn’t raced since Feb 17 when scoring impressively over 1000m here before being tipped out. Trialled well enough last Monday but the key for me is first up at 1200m. Tells me that he’s wound up and ready to go.
4 Rockon Tommy (Bet Now: $4.80) is three weeks between runs for Bill Doughty since racing at this track/distance where he just pulled way too hard in the run and had nothing left for the straight behind In Love With Paris. That form looks very good for this. If he can bring better racing manners and relax, he’ll go close.
1 Debellatio (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Smart Missile gelding that resumes for the Fred Kersley team. Had a two run prep during the Carnival, the latter seeing him finish 4.5L off Perfect Jewel in the WA Guineas. He’s been given a couple of solid trials in readiness for his return and isn’t badly treated at the weights after the claim.
Race 6. (17:35) Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (72+) 1100m
6 Galaxy Star (Bet Now: $1.95) looks as if she could well be the up and comer for the stable for the Carnival later in the year. Potentially was going to be that horse last year but injury made sure that didn’t happen. Returns with just one trial under the belt but it was a beauty to the eye. If she’s right, she’ll bolt in.
3 Snow Lord (Bet Now: $6.00) is a stablemate of Galaxy Star who is hard fit and in form. Loved the way he let down to win over 1000m here a fortnight back where Pike had him just off the pace before peeling clear and letting down hard to win. Has to stretch his brilliance to 1100m but I’m confident he can run well.
After two runs back from a break, there were question marks as to how well 2 Mr Motown (Bet Now: $18.00) was going but he bounced back to something near his best form in the Snow Lord race mentioned above setting back with cover and finishing off strongly. Gets a 2kg weight swing on that horse a one length defeat.
Race 7. (18:10) Rentokil Initial Handicap (1MW) 1200m
8 Arcadia Prince (Bet Now: $1.65) gets the nod in a ripping 1MW race. This bloke hasn’t raced since running a close up sixth to stablemate Perfect Jewel in the WA Guineas. Had the back of that horse in the run but just lacked the class to go with her. Been given a good break and his recent trial was very good to the eye. Happy to be with him.
3 Necklet comes back slightly in depth and grade after contesting the Sheila Gwynne a fortnight back where she was on speed throughout and looked to travel well but just found Mizlecki too good on the day. Has the pace to overcome the draw, hard fit, in from and Harvey rides. Ticks plenty of boxes.
4 Hoboken (Bet Now: $9.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he had three wide throughout and looked to travel well in the run but just couldn’t dash well enough when third to Get The Vibe. Necklet ran second in that race so the form reads okay and he is a good fresh horse.
Race 8. (18:45) Purslowe & Chipper Funerals Handicap (66+) 2150m
7 Mississippi Delta (Bet Now: $2.20) on top in the get out. Team Williams have a progressive stayer on their hands here and I’m confident she can get up and get the job done. She has won her past three, with the last two coming over 2000m at Pinjarra. Think she is looking for further and she gets it here. Runs up to her form and she just about wins.
2 Master Magician (Bet Now: $6.50) is five weeks between runs since scoring a tough on speed win over 2000m here, beating a similar field and doing it quite impressively. Tick over trial last week at Lark Hill looked good enough to my eye and Pateman does remain on, and he does ride the horse very well.
6 Gauged (Bet Now: $27.00) is racing in near career best form at the moment for the Steve Wolfe team. He has won his past two starts, the latest coming over 1900m when letting down hard from off the pace to win. He was 100m back in trip that day also so back up to 2150m will suit him and he should get a lovely run from the gate.
