4/1/2020 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Gawler

SA metro racing this Saturday heads to Gawler where nine races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

2 Borris In Ossory (Bet Now: $2.80) did some good things for me when winning last Saturday and I won’t be dropping off here. Ran over the mile at Morphettville where Stubby rode the perfect race in front, controlling things to suit himself and rightfully fought on strongly when challenged to get the win. Is a winner at this track/distance, should lead and prove hard to beat once again.

1 Karlovasi (Bet Now: $3.90) up to 1500m interests me given his recent runs have come at 1200m and he jumps straight to 1500m. Ran over 1200m here two weeks ago and was good in defeat behind the flying Enough Swagger. Just didn’t have the turn of foot to go with that mare, but stuck to the task, suggesting a rise in trip suits. Has the class to win.

4 Woulda Thought So (Bet Now: $3.60) So can be an improver at odds. He’s had two runs for Dean Saxon, first up closing off strongly over 1200m here behind Eminent Son. Then raced at Morphettville on Boxing Day when four wide for the trip in a total forgive. Suited up to 1500m and around this distance range was when he raced best when under the care of the Hayes/Dabernig team.

I think Will Clarken has a promising three year old on his hands in 3 Fortune Follows (Bet Now: $3.90), who debuted with a pretty sharp win at Morphettville on Boxing Day. He was bolting behind the speed. Just a matter of getting clear air. He got it and under hands and heels, got up on the peg. He’ll come on from that for sure and up to 1200m looks ideal.

1 Little Rich Boy (Bet Now: $3.60) is a John Hickmott trained three year old who passed the 1200m test with flying colours at this track two weeks ago, leading throughout and spanking his rivals. That was to the eye, but the clock says he had to win given he ran the first 600m in nearly 39 seconds, which is trackwork speed. Harder here, but hard fit and has the right racing pattern.

4 It’s A Shame (Bet Now: $15.00) is worth another look I feel. He comes through the Little Rich Boy race from two weeks ago at this track/distance and the set up didn’t suit him at all. They walked in front and it was turned into a real sit/sprint affair, which he didn’t like when the leader booted for home. Better suited ridden cold off a genuine speed.

5 Monraaj (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Ryan Balfour trained gelding that was kept quite safe in betting when resuming on Boxing Day at Morphettville. Sat wide no cover for the trip but he kept finding and tried very hard, but Magic Reward had the suck run in transit and was too sharp in winning. Provided that run hasn’t busted him, he’s one of the hardest to beat here.

6 Olive Grove (Bet Now: $5.50) is racing quite honestly for Darren Magro but has had a number of chances to break the maiden tag. I don’t think a win is far off. Had the run of the race at Bordertown last start behind the speed and loomed to win but couldn’t quite put them away. Hard fit, racing well and should run his usual honest race.

12 The Iron Lady (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Ken Sweeney trained daughter of Rebel Raider that was a few weeks between runs when racing over the mile at Morphettville in a maiden and worked home well from off the pace to run third to Bad Moon Rising, a surprise winner, so how strong is that form? Only time will tell.

Hoping sustained speed comes to the fore in the shape of 8 Sonic Deed (Bet Now: $3.60) for Ryan Balfour, who produced sustained speed to win at Morphettville just under two weeks ago in an impressive return to form. Consistency hasn’t been her strong point throughout her career, but if she can produce last start’s effort here, she’ll just about win.

A fast run 1100m looks suitable for 6 Jackpot Johnny (Bet Now: $5.00) but the query will be where he gets to in the run and how much start he has to give away. He was unlucky when racing at Morphettville last time, getting held up the final 100m or so, but at the same, it wasn’t as if he was wanting to burst through with purpose. Prefer to watch than back, but can win.

3 Devonte (Bet Now: $7.00) drops miles in grade/depth here after contesting a 2MW race over 1100m here two weeks ago and despite being the rank outsider, he ran an absolute beauty in defeat, running fourth to Arrow Lane, a proven city performer and has recently run well at Stakes level, so that clearly reads well for a race like this.

In the corner of 1 Mysticano (Bet Now: $11.00), who was an impressive winner over 1100m here two back before racing again at this track/distance two weeks ago when wide no cover on speed and just felt the pinch late behind Shamino. Like the booking of Jerry Chau and from gate two, he should get the run of the race. Up to 1200m should be no drama either.

4 French Rock (Bet Now: $7.50) does race best with fresh legs and that trend continued two weeks ago here where he was a month between runs. Sat wide no cover for the trip but despite that run, kept finding and loomed, but the class of Shamino was the difference between winning and losing. Fitter, up to 1200m, should take some beating.

9 Lippsy Shuffle (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Master Of Design gelding for the Stuart Gower stable that was a month between runs when racing over 1200m at Morphettville where he got back to near last in the run and finished off hard to run second to Sonic Deed, who was too good in producing sustained speed from the front. Good record at Gawler, he can win.

5 Barrymore (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Luke O’Connor trained stayer who should take some beating here one would assume. Was a month between runs when racing over 2000m at Morphettville where he led all the way and bolted up in a heat of the Southern Speed Series. Admittedly, it was a really thin race, but he still got the job done and should have room for improvement.

4 Coffee Amour (Bet Now: $4.40) has to be respected here. Big win here two weeks back at the metro meeting given she was wide and doing work yet still finished the strongest to score. Admittedly, out wide was the better ground so perhaps a touch flattered, but still a really good win, and a repeat effort of that here should see her around the mark.

7 Classy Joe (Bet Now: $13.00) is worth another look. He ran last Saturday at Morphettville over 2000m where he was very keen in the run out the back and just didn’t finish off at all behind Star Status. This looks considerably weaker compared to what he faced last weekend and the run prior at this track/distance in a much stronger race was quite good.

8 Exalted Dee (Bet Now: $3.60) is flying for Grant Young and returns to her favourite track. Placed here two weeks ago before backing up on Boxing Day at Morphettville and under a lovely steer from Holder, the mare was far too good, continuing her brilliant purple patch. Tends to save her best for Gawler and the way she’s going, she’s the safe option here.

1 Pickelhaube (Bet Now: $5.50) is flying for Richard Wilson. Couple of strong runner up placings to start the prep hold him in good stead for his win over 1500m here two weeks ago when put into a lovely spot by Voorham and despite doing a little bit wrong in the straight, he was too good for his rivals. 1700m should be fine and has upside.

3 Super Swoop (Bet Now: $13.00) can be a big improver here at odds. He comes through the Pickelhaube race from two weeks ago over 1500m here where he was first up and just didn’t have the speed in the legs to go with them but worked home okay late without threatening. Up in trip suits…may want one more, but does have the class factor.

1 Exalted Lauretta (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Grant Young trained mare who rarely runs a bad race. Was just under four weeks between runs when racing over 1200m at Morphettville on Boxing Day where she was on speed and giving a really good kick, but just lacked that hard race fitness and that got her beat in the end. Lands on speed here for sure and back to Mares grade, she’s likeable.

7 La Vita (Bet Now: $3.40) had trialled up very well prior to resuming at the Monday meeting at Morphettville where Stubby put her into a lovely spot just off the speed and once she popped into clear air, she was always going to win and was impressive. Likes racing at Gawler and she’s found a winnable race with natural improvement off the resumption.

8 Magnus Magic (Bet Now: $20.00) is likely being set up for a late assault at the Port Lincoln racing season, but she hasn’t been going too bad recently. Was keen on her running well here two weeks ago but gee she didn’t find much after getting the run of the race. Should get a good sit again from the gate and will be decent odds. One for multiples.

Looks to be really good placement by Grant Young with 4 Exalted Trail (Bet Now: $3.20). He’s three weeks between runs since contesting the Christmas Handicap at Morphettville and he was the best of the closers from the back when fourth to Ef Troop in an excellent performance considering he was outclassed on paper. Gets run of the race from gate one and if the inside is okay, he’s the horse to beat, clearly.

11 Atomic Lokade (Bet Now: $3.90) is a Grant Kluske trained mare that is just flying at the moment, winning three on end, the latest coming three weeks over 1050m at Morphettville when appreciating a fast speed and finishing right over the top in an impressive performance. Harder here, but gets in well at the weights and if she gets the right set up, which is speed on in front, she can win again.

I think the Gawler 1100m is a good set up for the Ken Sweeney trained speedster 10 Zarace (Bet Now: $8.00), who showed his customary toe to lead on Boxing Day at Morphettville and gave a good kick but tired late when fourth to Tiara Star. Up to 1100m should be no issue for him and I think he’s better suited here compared to the bigger track.

NEXT BEST: Race Seven Number 8 Exalted Dee

LONG SHOT: Race Five Number 1 Mysticano
