A ripping program has been assembled for Bendigo this Wednesday for Bendigo Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:00) No Fuss Event Hire Maiden Plate 1100m
Tricky race to start the day. I’ll lean the way of 7 Winning Partner (Bet Now: $2.20), who resumes for Tony McEvoy. Showed good promise during the Adelaide Carnival, running well behind Heaven’s Deal in a blacktype race before two runs in Melbourne behind Vassilator and Fighting Harada respectively. That form reads good for this and his recent Cranbourne trial was encouraging.
6 The Running Man (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Robbie Griffiths trained colt who was heavily backed when resuming over 1000m at Pakenham and the move almost came off, but he had to settle for a narrow second to Siege Warfare. On debut he was far from disgraced in the Blue Diamond Prelude behind Written By. That form reads well.
5 Solomon (Bet Now: $7.50) had trialled up really well prior to debuting at Pakenham where he attempted to lead all the way and looked to travel well but couldn’t quite finish it off when fifth to Siege Warfare. I think the firmer footing will help his cause and he was hard in the market that night so giving him respect.
Race 2. (12:30) Bendigo RSL Museum Maiden Plate 1400m
9 Suburbia (Bet Now: $7.00) for me. The Maher/Eustace stable has this O’Reilly colt, who debuted over 1300m here back in September and was quite good in defeat I thought behind the Stakes winner Mickey Blue Eyes. No recent tick over jump out so fitness levels are a tad unknown but I’m hoping with the run under the belt there’s natural improvement, and that form does read well.
7 Scipio (Bet Now: $3.30) looks to be a decent enough working progress for the Danny O’Brien team. Liked his resumption at Sale behind Sly Song before racing over 1300m here where Olly seemed to give him every chance in front but was pipped on the peg by My Boss. Probably prefer him with a bunny to chase. If that eventuates, he can go one better.
8 Shake On It (Bet Now: $4.80) is a son of Dundeel for Anthony Freedman who had trialled well prior to resuming on Moe Cup Day in a maiden where you could make a strong case he should have won, getting badly held up in the straight when seemingly full of running, going down narrowly at the hands of Zavance. Bigger track and hopefully clear air see him in the finish.
Race 3. (13:00) Rankins Catering Handicap 1400m
2 Mr Genoa (Bet Now: $1.85) is the huge query. Formerly with Adam Durrant but is now with Darren Weir. He debuted at Northam in early August and the manner in which he won under Pike was very impressive. Would love to know how he’s gone in work/trials, but he looks to have decent enough ability off what I saw on debut.
1 Dubai Tycoon (Bet Now: $3.90) is a Mick Price trained colt who was an impressive debut winner at Geelong in what has turned out to be a hot form race. He then took on the older horses at Hamilton and was very good in defeat when second to Revlis. Back to his own age, the small field and the form around him reads well.
4 Still Invincible (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to be a working progress for Tony McEvoy. Bit disappointing on face value when debuting at the Valley before going to Cranbourne where he was confidently supported and got the job done, albeit narrowly. McEvoy thinks he is a blacktype horse. If that’s the case, he’d want to be winning here.
Race 4. (13:35) BRB Electric Grand Handicap (64) 1100m
I think 1 Bolek (Bet Now: $2.70) is the safe option. Michael Moroney trains this sprinter, who is first up here after a pretty good opening prep, which ended at the Valley when placing behind Maximus, who is a really good horse and has since won in Sydney. Had two trials back in August but didn’t race. Has had one recent trial and he went very good behind a good one in Nasdex.
8 Splashette (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Testa Rossa mare resuming for the Jarrod McLean stable. This girl was tagged as a bit of a non winner early on in her career but she somewhat put it together towards the end of last prep, including a decent enough effort in the Lightning behind Nature Strip. Interesting to see what she does here fresh.
It’s a ripping name 6 Dennis (Bet Now: $8.50) and he’s got a bit of ability to match. Only won the one race from eight starts but has placed on a further five occasions so he’s generally around the mark, and that was the case last time at Echuca when second to Funding. Should get a lovely run from the draw and is a leading contender.
Race 5. (14:10) Champions IGA Handicap (70) 1100m
I think a relatively safe option is 3 Layel (Bet Now: $2.80), Mick Price trains this mare, who hasn’t raced since the Creswick Final down the Flemington straight where she finished down the track behind Nature Strip. Been given a decent enough break and looks ready to go off the back of a narrow but impressive Cranbourne trial win and is a good fresh horse.
2 As It Lies (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Foxwedge mare that is first up for Brent Stanley. This mare can be hot and cold at times but when she is on, my word she’s very good and a city class horse. Can sprint well fresh and though I can’t find a recent trial/jump out, I’m sure first up on a Cup Day she’ll be forward enough to run well.
4 All About Rhythm (Bet Now: $23.00) is a handy mare for Saab Hassan who resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since June 7 at Ballarat when finishing fourth to the handy Weir mare Merrimen. Generally needs a run or two, but a recent jump out was encouraging and from gate one, Dunn should have her in the box seat.
Race 6. (14:45) Bet365 Handicap (78) 1100m
5 Wall Street Wolf (Bet Now: $16.00) is a former Hayes/Dabernig trained galloper who had his first run for Logan McGill at Mornington (Metro) and I thought he was very good without much luck behind The Centaurian. Two time second up winner and was scratched from an easier race at Sale on Sunday in preference for this.
6 Won Ball (Bet Now: $2.90) is a lightly raced son of Casino Prince for Darren Weir who was on notice after being beaten in his first three runs this time in but he bounced back to winning form last time at Pakenham over 1200m in impressive fashion. Fast run 1100m looks ideal and he’ll be strong late. Just doesn’t want to concede too much head start.
1 Barood (Bet Now: $6.00) is an absolute beauty for the Sue Murphy team from Naracoorte. Ran in the feature sprint on Murray Bridge Cup Day where he loomed large to win but the well supported Mazurek just packed too many on the line and just proved too good. Weighted poorly but he’s tough and loves to dig in.
Race 7. (15:20) All Seasons Resort Handicap (70) 1300m
2 Lord Sundowner (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Hard Spun for Mick Price who was well backed when resuming on Bairnsdale Cup Day over 1200m where he seemed to have his chance behind Toy Boy but the horse pulled up with the Thumps so a clear forgive. He’s a city class horse at his best and he’s at his best when on speed and rolling.
4 Woulda Thought So (Bet Now: $3.80) is a talented four year old for the Hayes/Dabernig team who was well supported when resuming on Benalla Cup Day and the bets were landed with a brilliant finale from the back to get the job done. Goes just as good second up and if the speed is on, he’ll look the winner at some stage.
3 Shehroz (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of Al Maher for Archie Alexander who was well found at odds last time at Ballarat and under hard riding from Declan Bates, he found plenty and just proved too good. Just needs to stretch it out beyond 1200m now but off last start, it looks as if that should be no issue. Good draw to help.
Race 8. (16:00) Bendigo Cup 2400m
I think 3 Lord Fandango (Bet Now: $6.00) can bounce back into the winners list. Thought his Benalla Cup resumption was a real eye catcher before going to defend his Herbert Power title where the race shape just didn’t suit him but he was sound enough in defeat behind Yucatan Ire. His 2400m record is very good and this does look a drop down in depth.
6 Furrion (Bet Now: $2.05) can win, but gee whiz, at $2.10? Absolutely not. I have him at around $3+. In terms of brilliance, he has these on toast and if it becomes a sit/sprint, he’ll likely win given that factor of brilliance, but the two runs at 2000m, he has been held comfortably. The 2400m box is the query, but is a high class animal…just the price is rock bottom.
7 Master Of Arts (Bet Now: $91.00) is the unknown. John Thompson trains this stayer, who comes through the ST Leger where he was eased out of the race behind Big Blue. Vet found nothing so put it down to not handling the bottomless surface. Back on top of the ground here, he could well be a sharp improver at odds.
Race 9. (16:40) Bendigo Locksmiths Handicap (70) 1600m
10 Eshtiraak (Bet Now: $3.00) for me. The Hayes/Dabernig team trains this four year old, who was wide no cover last time out at Bendigo yet kept surging under Lewis German and in the end was beaten in the last stride by Ringerdingding. Third up, he should be ready to go fitness wise and is a third up winner. Likeable.
If you were on 3 Tan Tat Trusting (Bet Now: $3.20) over the mile on Cranbourne Cup Day last time, apologies for bringing it up. It was the sickest of bobs that went against him, with the verdict going to the erratic Black Sail. The run prior behind A Shin Rock at Flemington was a beauty. Just not sure about him at a strong 1600m. But he’s got the A1 form.
If you want one to include in wider multiples, make it 1 Royal Request (Bet Now: $91.00). Darwin specialist for Neil Dyer who resumed on a wet track at Pakenham and couldn’t pick his feet up at all behind Akkadian. Back on firmer footing and up to the mile are big ticks, and we know he’ll be strong at the end. Doubt he wins, but sneak a first four spot.
Race 10. (17:20) Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Series Heat 8 (78) 1400m
He’s just about the bet of the day is 2 Fastnet Latina (Bet Now: $6.50). Very good first up run at Benalla behind Sheriff John Stone before going to Caulfield where the tempo was far from ideal but he was again strong late when fourth to Manuel. Third up record is outstanding and he should just about be at peak fitness. Really keen on his chances.
3 Jaws Of Steel (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Darren Weir trained gelding who resumed over 1200m on Moe Cup Day in what looked a pretty strong race and I thought his effort from the back was very good when fourth to the well backed stablemate, Superhard. Not really known as a fresh horse so the fact he ran so well there is a hint he’s come back in super order and he has a fab second up record.
Was good to see 12 Savaju (Bet Now: $35.00) bounce back to positive form last time out over 1300m at Bendigo. Thought she was looking for retirement after a string of poor runs but ran home well last start behind Penny To Sell. Think the rise to 1400m will suit and she does tend to save her best for the home track.
