A bumper nine event program has been set down for Eagle Farm this Saturday, headlined by the two Group l races, the Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) and the Queensland derby (2400m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (11:43) Drinkwise (Bm85) Hcp 1400m
17 Daggers (Bet Now:Β $3.00) has found winning form and he can go on with it. That win came three weeks ago at the Gold Coast, leading throughout, ridden like the best horse in the race by Tommy Berry and duly saluted in dominant fashion. Form out of that race has been franked and despite the rise in grade/depth, he’s top seed for me.
16 Bengal Diamond (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is bursting to win. She ran third in the Silk Stocking when on speed and was there to win but just found one better in She’s Got Pizzazz. Has versatility re racing style and do think getting to a bigger track is ideal.
14 Sunset Dreaming (Bet Now:Β $15.00) is third up from a spell and should be at peak fitness. She ran in the Silk Stocking last start where she got a mile out of her ground and was never a factor despite making up some headway. Better suited here, she’s dangerous.
Race 2. (12:18) Kilcoy Global Foods (Bm85) Hcp 1000m
4 Lyles (Bet Now:Β $2.60) is a sharp short course type that resumes for Matty Smith. He did some nice things when last in work and established himself as a Saturday class animal. He can really rocket from on speed and his trial work to get ready suggests he is here to play.
6 Petticoat (Bet Now:Β $13.00) did a bit too much early work when resuming over this trip at Gosford three weeks ago and I think that hard run just told on her late in the piece behind Compensation. Like her back to 1000m and with a better run in transit, she only runs well.
1 Belegato (Bet Now:Β $17.00) is a Liam Birchley trained gelding that resumes. This guy is first up, his last run coming on Jan 3 when fourth at this track/distance. He does seem to race best early on in the prep and he has class when right so watch betting.
Race 3. (12:53) Premier's Cup (G3) 2400m
6 Athabascan (Bet Now:Β $8.00) has been given a mini freshen up since the Sydney Cup where he ran a closing fourth to Changingoftheguard, finishing off his race strongly against the pattern. Tick over trial was good and he has class in his own right.
2 Royal Supremacy (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is dangerous with his best. He comes through the Chairmans and ran an honest race but perhaps just needed the run I thought. Hard fit now, up to a suitable trip and has a touch class on his side.
5 Newlook (Bet Now:Β $17.00) comes through the Andrew Ramsden. He landed on speed and tried hard but just felt the pinch late in a testing race. I think with a more patient steer, he can run a much improved race.
Race 4. (13:28) Sires' Produce (G2) 1400m
I have said since day one that 4 Martist (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is the best 2YO in the stable of Tony Gollan and I thought he was super in his return in the Spirit Of Boom, closing with real purpose late in the piece when second to Vantorix. I do feel he is more suited at 1400m vs Vantorix, with good upside…I think he’s the each way bet.
All you can do is win and that is what 1 Vantorix (Bet Now:Β $10.00) has done in three starts, the latest in the Spirit Of Boom when given a 12/10 by J Mac and finished best to score. 1400m is the query, he’s still mentally there, but the engine clearly is.
18 The Autumn Affair (Bet Now:Β $67.00) was too bad to be true in the Spirit Of Boom. She got into a decent spot off speed but just whacked in the run to the line in a plain effort. I have had her earmarked as a JJ horse for a while so now at 1400m in the key lead up, it’s contender or pretender time.
Race 5. (14:03) Lord Mayor's Cup (G3) 1800m
14 Miss Joelene (Bet Now:Β $16.00) is three weeks between runs since contesting the Hollindale where she was off speed and in a race where Pride Of Jenni is involved, she was never going to be a factor. Much better suited here I feel and will launch late.
9 Militarize (Bet Now:Β $2.80) wasn’t too bad in the Hollindale. He got off speed and was never really threatening but kept chasing and was far from disgraced. Better suited at this level and a bit of cushion in the track will be ideal.
3 Depth Of Character (Bet Now:Β $8.50) was a sick watch if you were on in the Scone Cup, getting badly held up in behind a wall of horses and pretty much went around like a barrier trial. Maps to settle handy, do no work and be strong late.
Race 6. (14:38) Fred Best Classic (G3) 1400m
I am convinced that 15 Regal Award (Bet Now:Β $20.00) is flying. Just got a very negative ride in the Hawkesbury Guineas and he was never a threat behind Skyhook. He should have won the start prior and his tick over trial since was very good. He’s right up to this level IMO.
5 Brave Monarch (Bet Now:Β $4.60) is a beauty for Team Munce that has been freshened up since the Queensland Guineas triumph where I don’t think he was overly comfortable at the mile but he was just miles too good. Fresh legs at 1400m, he clearly appeals.
9 Fabulantes (Bet Now:Β $46.00) will be launching late, as seen at Doomben two weeks back when off speed and closed with purpose late when second to Estremo. I think he will be strong at the end. Just a matter of what sort of start he concedes.
Race 7. (15:13) Queensland Derby (G1) 2400m
Good luck sorting this Derby out with confidence. But, I do think the filly 18 Solid Gold (Bet Now:Β $4.50) is going to take beating. Wide barrier meant the Rough Habit was essentially a barrier trial for her but loved the way she closed off her race. She’ll eat up 2400m and with a half positive ride, I think she’ll only run well.
I am interested at odds in 9 Amazake (Bet Now:Β $17.00). I thought the ride in the SA Derby was quite negative and was good late on a testing track. The trip will be no issue and if this track can dry right out, I think he’s well and truly in play.
1 Kilman (Bet Now:Β $13.00) had conditions to suit in the Rough Habit but even allowing for that, I thought he was impressive from the front, leading throughout and gave nothing else a look in. He’ll be out of trouble near the speed and only run well.
Race 8. (15:52) Kingsford Smith Cup (G1) 1300m
I am a bit surprised there were some potting the run of 1 Jimmysstar (Bet Now:Β $3.90) in the 10,000. To my eye, despite being a beaten favourite, I thought his run was quite good considering he was fresh at 1200m, tight track, and in restricted room. Here he is at 1300m, fitter, on a bigger track, and if he gets room to move and wind up…I say good luck beating him.
12 Fangirl (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is the fascinating runner. If this track can dry out later in the week, gee I think she’ll run a beauty. Has been kept on ice since the All Aged when first up and just battled late but it was a day where up/in was dynamite. Tick over trial was good and class will carry her a long way.
It wasn’t the deepest of fields but the win from 9 Yellow Brick (Bet Now:Β $26.00) in The Archer was quite impressive, giving them a start and a beating, getting better as the race went on. That was on May 5 and he does seem to race best on the fresh side…If Rothfire won the 10,000, why can’t this guy win a Group l as well.
Race 9. (16:28) Helen Coughlan Stakes (L) 1200m
10 Poster Girl (Bet Now:Β $8.00) should appreciate getting to 1200m after resuming over 1110m in the Bright Shadow, working home pretty well from off speed in a good effort and good return. Fitter, 1200m, bigger track, she only runs well.
2 Niance (Bet Now:Β $5.00) is dangerous. She has been freshened up since resuming at Morphettville in the John Hawkes and was a total forgive after sitting five wide the trip. Tick over jumpout was strong and this looks a race well within reach with her best.
8 Lonhro’s Queen (Bet Now:Β $35.00) should be better for the first up run in the Bright Shadow when back near last and charged to the line late in the piece when fourth to Cigar Flick. The rise to 1200m looks ideal and can settle much closer in the run. Just needs luck from the gate.
