Randwick will back up from it’s Boxing Day program on Tuesday with another strong nine race card this Saturday, where the feature race is the Christmas Classic (1200m). The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:30) New Years Day At Royal Randwick Plate 1100m
9 Secret Lady (Bet Now: $3.70) is assured a start in the Slipper after her win in the Golden Gift last time out. It was just a case of race experience beating a debutante who had plenty to learn, a boom debutante in Plague Stone. She is hard fit with that hard experience, should lead and take a power of beating.
1 Legislation (Bet Now: $3.10) is a really good looking colt for Team Snowden who is first up. Debuted over the 1000m here on October 21 where he had a lovely sit near the speed under Damian Browne and once he gave the colt a squeeze, he put them away and won really impressively. Bolted up in a recent Gosford trial and he appears ready to go.
13 Everard (Bet Now: $35.00) is a Kris Lees trained daughter of Sebring having her first start. This girl has had two trials to prepare for her debut at Wyong and Gosford respectively. The second trial was behind Lilith and she looked to go about her business nicely. Good sign that the stable send her to town on debut.
Race 2. (13:05) TAB Handicap (76) 1300m
5 Bella Vella (Bet Now: $5.00) is a promising filly for the Waterhouse/Bott yard who resumed over 1000m at Hawkesbury and the big bets were landed as she led all the way and spanked them under Hippo in really good time. Rises a fair bit in depth/grade here, but she looks the leader and should take some beating.
3 Epidemic (Bet Now: $3.70) is a filly in ripping form at the moment for the James Cummings yard. She has won her past two, the latest when facing three rivals and winning impressively on speed. Thought she trialled up well last week behind Secret Lady and I love the booking of Declan McDonogh. Hard to beat.
6 Kissing Game (Bet Now: $9.50) was well supported late when racing in a Canterbury maiden under the lights and with some help via Tye Angland and a lovely ride behind the speed, he angled clear on the filly and let down strongly to eventually wear down Dinnigan. 1300m on the big track third up looks ideal and is a knockout chance.
Race 3. (13:40) Book Summer Hospitality Today Mile (95) 1600m
4 New Universe (Bet Now: $3.00) is racing okay this time in but probably not at the brilliant level he produced in the Winter. Won well two back on Ballarat Cup Day before sitting off a brutal speed at Rosehill three weeks ago and considering the way it set up for him, I thought he was a touch disappointing in only managing third. Give him another look.
6 Hunter Jack (Bet Now: $6.50) is an absolute beauty for the Tim Martin yard. He resumed with an eye catching second to Sedanzer at Rosehill before racing under the lights at Canterbury where he did a power of work on speed and was left a sitting shot, but he was only outgunned late by Carluca. Gets right down in the weights and maps super.
3 Liapari (Bet Now: $7.00) trialled up okay prior to resuming in the Invinzabeel race at Rosehill where he sat off the fast speed but being fresh, he just looked in need of the run and ran out of condition late to run seventh. He has a fab record at Randwick and he can pull out a decent run second up. Definite improver up to the mile.
Race 4. (14:15) Tab.com.au Handicap (75) 1100m
Siding with 1 Junglized (Bet Now: $5.50). Hard fit three year old for Brad Widdup who hasn’t raced for four weeks since running last of four at Rosehill behind Epidemic. Been freshened up and I thought his recent Hawkesbury trial was quite encouraging. Looks to get a soft lead and I think back to 1100m is ideal.
2 Kennedy (Bet Now: $3.10) has been given a four week freshen up since racing over 1200m at Kembla Grange where he lapped up the soft track under Jeff Penza and put them away with a fair bit of ease. Break between runs is the query but I thought he trialled up quite well last Tuesday at Warwick Farm behind Secret Lady.
4 From Within (Bet Now: $9.50) could be the watch horse here. She promised so much early on in her career when with Chris Waller but didn’t go on with it. Now with Edward O’Rourke. Had her first run for the new stable at Canterbury and in the yard she looked big and the market reacted, out to $6 from $3.80 and she did too much work in the run behind Duchess Pedrille. Happy to give her a look here.
Race 5. (14:50) #theraces Handicap (80) 1200m
6 Brave Song (Bet Now: $1.80) gets the nod. Very progressive colt for Triple Crown and Team Snowden who was heavily backed when resuming against the older horses under lights at Canterbury and for the most part, he looked in trouble but once McEvoy gave him clear air, he attacked the line and won like a really good horse. He can win this and go onto better things.
2 Flow (Bet Now: $4.20) is the watch horse. He was heavily backed in an open handicap at Rosehill three weeks back but got involved in a mad speed battle in front and was left a sitting shot when fourth to Invinzabeel. Form out of that didn’t exactly stack up last Saturday, and he does rise in weight. Drops in depth somewhat but how much did that run take out of him? Time will tell.
3 Fanning (Bet Now: $16.00) showed a nice turn of foot to win two back at Wyong (Metro) before racing under the lights at Canterbury where he didn’t get much room in the straight and arguably should have finished closer behind Viceroy. 1200m at Randwick is the query, but he’s a hard fit horse in form who has a tidy overall record.
Race 6. (15:30) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1100m
13 Acquital (Bet Now: $3.40) is the best horse in the race by a mile I think. He is just doing too much wrong but his ability gets him nearly home by itself. That was nearly the case first up at Goulburn but he bungled the start and had to come the widest when a close up second to Bee Neata. I think it’s a very good lead that the stable bring him here despite being a maiden.
7 Remittance (Bet Now: $8.50) is a five year old gelding trained by Rod Northam who has run well at metro level before so this is a very winnable assignment. Was confidently backed when resuming on his home track at Scone and the bets were landed with a dominant from off the pace under a lovely steer from Thompson. He can measure up here for sure.
Look for 11 Sonic Girl (Bet Now: $14.00) to savage the line late. This mare resumed over 1100m at Mudgee and gee she worked home with real purpose late from the back when fourth to Caisson Platoon, beaten just over a length. She’ll get back here, but there looks to be a stack of speed engaged, so she’ll get her chance for sure.
Race 7. (16:10) Christmas Classic 1200m
Taking a chance on 12 My Country (Bet Now: $13.00) for Team Snowden. She hasn’t raced since November 4 when sitting near the speed at Rosehill and trying hard when third to Zumbelina. Been given a good break and her recent trial win at Gosford was outstanding. Her chances are enhanced further with the likely cushion in the track.
Class will nearly carry 1 Music Magnate (Bet Now: $3.30) towards victory. He is the Group l winner of the field first up for Bjorn Baker. He has been given a long spell since a mixed Winter Carnival in Brisbane. He has smashed the clock in both trials leading in, so he’s definitely wound up to go well fresh. Just has to carry the weight.
9 Isorich (Bet Now: $23.00) is just a beauty for the Wayne Seelin yard. Every time he steps out at odds and for the most part he runs well. That wasn’t the case in the Razor Sharp but he did a power of work on speed and just tired late. He should get the lovely cart over via Music Magnate, he’s hard fit, down in the weights…a must for exotics.
Race 8. (16:50) Hyland Boxing Day Sale Handicap (83) 1800m
9 Vaucluse Bay (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Chris Waller trained four year who looks a knockout chance here at odds. He ran over the mile here a fortnight back in what was a fast run affair and was off the bit a fair way out but he stuck on and in fact his last 200m was very good behind Sedanzer. He’ll love the rise to 1800m, should be near peak fitness and has a stack of upside.
3 Gambler’s Blues (Bet Now: $4.60) hadn’t won for a long time but that all changed at Rosehill over 2000m three weeks back. Lovely ride by Hippo got the galloper home in a struggle, diving late nearer the inside and finishing too good for Lead Choreographer. Back to 1800m is no issue, hard fit, in form and draws well.
5 Reneged (Bet Now: $16.00) could be the improver up in trip. He ran over the mile here a fortnight back where he got a mile out of his ground due to the tempo but I thought he worked home well late behind Sedanzer, who was a good thing beat in the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford so the form reads well and I like this Declan McDonogh. He rides very well.
Race 9. (17:30) ATC Owners Benefit Card Sprint (80) 1200m
10 Sugar Bella (Bet Now: $3.80) is a mare I’m prepared to take the gamble on. Kris Lees trains this girl and she was first up for 14 months when resuming under the lights at Canterbury and the market thought she’d be wound up to run well. She did better than that, she bolted in and ran good time. Worried there might be second up syndrome, but her quality/upside can’t be ignored.
2 O’Racheal (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Chris Waller trained mare who had good support at odds when resuming at this track/distance where she was parked just off the pace and tried hard but her condition just gave out late when second to Anatola. Has the run under the belt now and she’ll be stronger at the end this time around.
3 Overstep (Bet Now: $10.00) is threatening to win one of these mares races but she is just doing too much wrong. She had market support in the Noire race at Rosehill but just got too far back after a tardy beginning and that was her fate sealed, but she still ran on well. I couldn’t back to her win because she’s too costly, but she should run well all the same.
